My son's favorite is science like his dad... (^_^)
He likes to experiment and observe whats going on after.
And here we go again...

What happens if a plane is struck by lightning?

Is it will start glowing like a disco bar? LOL

Lightning is a massive flow of charge carries thousand of volts of electric current. Plus! It is extremely, fatal for a living being and can damage anything can come on its way.

It was really terrifying!

Now, many times airplanes get caught in a heavy lightning storm. However, Airplane is designed to handle the lightning strikes.

The outer skin of most plane is primarily made of aluminum! Aluminum is a good conductor of electricity.

When lightning hits the airplane the electric current travels to the outer skin of the plane. It does not have the plane, eventually its exit of to another extreme it which is tail. Plus the airplane and the passenger within remain protected.

Why does hot air balloon float?

Is it because he has invisible wings?

Of course no?!

It is because of the density. Density is a measure of mass present per unit volume. Lesser the density, lighter will be the object. Now, density varies with temperature.

Is it complicated?

I will explain... When a hot air balloon is on the ground the air inside and outside the balloon is at same temperature and density. However, when we turn on the burn of the balloon the air inside of the balloon starts getting hot.

The molecule of air move faster and spare a parts taking up more space.

Hence, the air inside the balloon becomes less dense than the air outside. As less dense is lighter the hot air balloon rises and dose begins to float.

Your post adds my knowledge and insight

Thanks... a lot will come as long that I am in the mood to share! Hahaha...

I would have liked it with even more science details but I think that attracting our children or new people into the science bandwagon is a nice way to improve our world. So I read your article, I work in aviation so the render of the 787 brought me here :D

Thank you @alexdory! More details will come soon! I just heard it all and read some books of my son then the explanation of my friend who works as a mechanical engineer in Etihad.

The outer skin of an airplane has surge protector or a kind of lighting arrester, any excessive or external electrical energy will just going to absorbed by that cover and dissipate thru the air in terms of heat.
