One of the most complicated problems of life in space is radiation, on Earth both the atmosphere and the magnetic field that surrounds it protect us from cosmic rays from both the Sun and other stars, in outer space with nothing that protects us against this radiation it can kill us in a very short time.

That is why several biological experiments are carried out on the International Space Station (ISS) to help us protect future astronauts from radiation, genetic experiments that are preparing a series of biological tools that could be useful in the near future of the long-term space flight.

The research of a group of adolescent students has made it possible for NASA astronauts to use CRISPR / Cas9 technology successfully for the first time thanks to an experiment prepared on the ground by the students of the Genes in Space project sponsored by the ISS in a contest held annually.
La investigación de un grupo de estudiantes adolescentes ha conseguido que por primera vez, los astronautas de la NASA pudieran utilizar con éxito la tecnología CRISPR / Cas9 gracias a un experimento preparado en tierra por los estudiantes del proyecto Genes in Space patrocinado por la ISS en un concurso celebrado anualmente.
The exposure of astronauts to radiation causes cosmic rays to break the DNA chains of their body, under normal conditions there are tools in our body that are capable of repairing these breaks in the DNA but it was unknown if this repair mechanism would work the same in empty space.
La exposición de los astronautas a la radiación provoca que los rayos cósmicos rompan las cadenas de ADN de su cuerpo, en condiciones normales existen herramientas en nuestro cuerpo que son capaces de reparar esas roturas en el ADN pero se desconocía si este mecanismo de reparación funcionaría igual en el espacio vacío.

What these students did was reproduce the breaks of the double helix that occur in astronauts and observe if the natural mechanism repairs them correctly, using the well-known genetic editing tool called CRISPR, the students simulated these DNA breaks in yeast to to be able to observe how they are repaired.
Lo que hicieron estos estudiantes fue reproducir las roturas de la doble hélice que se producen en los astronautas y observar si el mecanismo natural las repara correctamente, utilizando la herramienta de edición genética ya sobradamente conocida llamada CRISPR los estudiantes simularon estas roturas de ADN en levaduras para poder observar como son reparadas.
The experiment was previously prepared on the ground by this group of adolescents and taken to the ISS to be able to reproduce the experiment in a weightless environment and, to the surprise of the scientists, the radiation-damaged DNA sequences were correctly repaired as was the case.
El experimento fue previamente preparado en tierra por este grupo de adolescentes y llevado a la ISS para poder reproducir el experimento en un entorno de ingravidez y, para sorpresa de los científicos, las secuencias de ADN dañadas por la radiación se repararon correctamente al igual que lo harían en la Tierra.
