A group of researchers from the Illinois Institute of Technology has brought to market the first liquid fuel capable of storing electricity, which they have called nano-electrofuel, a system of easily rechargeable flow batteries, with 23% more power than lithium batteries and for half the price.

Normally, flow batteries work using two components dissolved in a liquid medium that are introduced into two containers separated by a membrane that creates a flow of electrical current, but in this new system, the liquid works as a fuel that can be removed from the battery and replace it with an already charged one.

The fact of being a high energy density liquid allows the same fluids to be used in different devices, so the fluid, charged at the recharging station from renewable energy sources, can be used to refuel vehicles, or for stationary storage and other applications.
