Depending on their characteristics and uses, there are different types of plastics, some well-known such as PVC (Polyvinyl), and among them is thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) which is commonly used to manufacture, among other things, cases for mobile phones and footwear, to which a group of scientists have added a new component.
Dependiendo de sus características y usos existen distintos tipos de plásticos, algunos muy conocidos como el PVC (Polivinilo), y entre ellos está el poliuretano termoplástico (TPU) que se usa comúnmente para fabricar, entre otras cosas, fundas para teléfonos móviles y calzado, al que un grupo de científicos le han añadido un nuevo componente.
Specifically, they added bacterial spores, structures that contain the genetic material of bacteria, capable of resisting long periods without water or nutrients, with extreme conditions of heat or cold. Some of these spores remain viable even after thousands of years or after being boiled.

The bacteria that the scientists have chosen for the experiment has been a strain of Bacillus subtilis, which has the ability to decompose plastic polymeric materials, although it also has other uses. These spores were mixed with thermoplastic polyurethane granules in a plastic molding machine for this purpose.

In this molding machine, the ingredients are mixed and melted at 135 degrees Celsius and then molded into thin plastic strips. These strips were subsequently put in contact with the humidity of the environment and the nutrients from the compost and the spores germinated inside the plastic strips.

After five months, the plastics achieved a degradation of 90% without the need for other additional microbes. This is interesting because plastics do not always end up in composting piles under controlled conditions and in this way, even if they end up in a sterile area, these plastics carry with them the microbes that will degrade them.

These bacterial spores are not natural but were subjected to extreme temperatures for increasingly longer periods of time, which allowed them to mutate naturally in order to survive, to finally be able to mix them with plastic and subject them to the manufacturing process without losing his faculties.
Estas esporas bacterianas no son naturales sino que fueron sometidas a temperaturas extremas durante períodos de tiempo cada vez mayores, con lo que consiguieron que mutasen de forma natural para poder sobrevivir, para finalmente poder mezclarlas con el plástico y someterlas al proceso de fabricación sin que pierdan sus facultades.

I have always loved the concept of plastics that self decompose. As we move forward more and more plastics will be completely degradable instead of polluting our oceans and landfills with eternal plastics. Great post!
