One of the objectives for achieving sustainable use of energy is the energy efficiency of both residential and commercial buildings, as the wise man said, the cheapest and most sustainable energy is the one that is not wasted and one of the elements that most influences in the energy expenditure of buildings are the elevators.

That is why a team of students from the University of Durham has designed an energy recovery system for elevators that could recover up to seventy percent of the kinetic energy of elevators, taking advantage of when the elevator car is going down and is more than half full or rising and is less than half full.
Por eso un equipo de estudiantes de la Universidad de Durham ha diseñado un sistema de recuperación de energía para los ascensores que podría recuperar hasta un setenta por ciento de la energía cinética de los ascensores, aprovechando cuando el carro del ascensor está bajando y está más de la mitad lleno o subiendo y está menos de la mitad lleno.

In elevators, the car has a counterweight that goes up and down in the opposite direction to the car. When the counterweight goes down, the car goes up and vice versa. If the car goes down loaded, it weighs more than the counterweight, so it goes down by gravity generating energy, in the same way, in the opposite case it is the counterweight that generates the energy.
En los ascensores la cabina lleva un contrapeso que sube y baja en dirección opuesta a la cabina, uando el contrapeso baja, la cabina sube y al revés, si la cabina baja cargada pesa más que el contrapeso por lo que baja por medio de la gravedad generando energía, del mismo modo, en el caso contrario es el contrapeso el que genera la energía.
Furthermore, under normal conditions, the energy generated by the braking of the elevator is lost in the form of heat through braking resistors. What this system does is capture this energy using ultracapacitors, store it and return it to the system when necessary which reduces the energy consumption of the elevator.
Además, en condiciones normales, la energía que se genera por el frenado del ascensor se pierde en forma de calor a través de resistencias de frenado, lo que hace este sistema es capturar esta energía mediante ultracapacitores, almacenarla y devolverla al sistema cuando sea necesario lo que reduce el consumo de energía del ascensor.

To achieve this, the system uses a DC-DC converter along with a bank of supercapacitors, which allows the charging and discharging of energy in applications with high start and stop cycles, which is how elevators work, recovering energy and storing it for future operation of the elevator.
Pare conseguirlo el sistema utiliza un convertidor DC-DC junto con un banco de supercapacitores, lo que permite la carga y descarga de energía en aplicaciones con altos ciclos de arranque y parada, que es como funcionan los ascensores, recuperando energía y almacenándola para el funcionamiento futuro del ascensor.
Now all that remains is to manufacture a minimum viable product (MVP) to carry out the relevant tests to optimize the operation of the system before being launched on the market, to help create buildings that are energy efficient and contribute to energy savings and therefore to taking care of the planet a little more.
Ahora solo queda fabricar un producto mínimo viable (MVP) para realizar las pruebas pertinentes que permitan optimizar el funcionamiento del sistema antes de ser lanzado al mercado, para ayudar a crear edificios que sean eficientes energéticamente y contribuyan al ahorro de energía y por ende a cuidar un poco más el planeta.
