When Science Hits the “Start Button” on Disruption
You’d expect groundbreaking science to come from big labs, famous professors, and projects swimming in grant money. Turns out, not so much.
A new Nature study found that research teams with more early-career scientists are actually more likely to produce disruptive discoveries — the kind that shift entire fields rather than just polish existing ideas.

Why does this happen?
Because fresh eyes aren’t bound by tradition. Beginners question the sacred cows, ignore the “rules,” and try things senior scientists might dismiss as too risky or naive. Ironically, that “naivety” drives the boldest breakthroughs.
My takeaway:
Progress doesn’t come only from experience. It often comes from curiosity unshackled by hierarchy. Maybe the next revolution in physics, biology, or AI won’t start in a tenured office—but in the mind of a postdoc who still dares to ask, “Wait, but why do we even do it that way?”
