Optimistic Nihilism /

in #science8 years ago (edited)

Said shortly,

as a trained physicist, and in particular as one with an interest in formal mathematics, I'm the bad position that I hardly every find any science related explanatory video that I don't agree with in some spot. I know that to explain something properly, sometimes you want to make gross simplifications and so for the most part, I learned to live with such wrongings.
There's a youtube channel Kurzgesagt which doesn't appear to have a steemit account (not that surprising) and by which I am repeatedly entertained by. I think I found it first watching the video on quantum computing below - a field I worked in before going into augmented reality.

I'm reminded of the channel because they just uploaded a sort of meta video, which is somewhat philosophical. It's about Nihilism, something people repeatedly come back to, explaining in how it hasn't to be associated with a goth kind of sad feel lifestyle.

I don't personally relate to the last part (as I rather subscribe to a physical anti-realism and were never much concerned with death and such) but I really like how the first half merges popular imaginary of Segan and popular graphics I already know from the web (like the week-as-dots sheet).
Now that I mentioned Segan, I feel obliged to add my favorite optimistic video on the web.

In the future, I write up an overview of the youtube channels I can stomach :)

Take care

Who is Segan? Oh, I see, Carl Sagan!
The Optimistic Nihilism video is funny - sounds like the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe. Nihilism is a difficult attractor to escape from.

But why would you even want that, that's the point :)

Very enlightening video about quantum computers. I am into physics myself, too, but I had no idea of what they were, till now.

Funny the video mentions the TSP, the flagship of the Turing NP problems. I have a keen interest in the TSP. I did an essay about it for my degree studies.

Thanks!

Which degree?

Physics. I am a little embarassed of how little I know about modern physics, being quite close to getting my degree. I had not established the link between nanotechnology and quantum computers. The video was very instructive.

Glad it could help. I did the last pieces of my PhD just this May.

i m also subscribed to Kurzgesagt

The quantum computing video is super nice. It is indeed refreshing to see something that explains more details while still trying to be clear and concise!

And in flashy colors :)

You should check out "PBS Spacetime" on YouTube. They talk about all kinds of interesting theoretical physics matters actively seek out misconceptions that could be made in their videos and debunk them.
