Imagine if you can gather a lot of energy from every stars which is hundred million light years away from us. There are thousand of galaxies each one is filled with billions of stars. What if you can gather all those energy sources and create a super weapon like Dr.Octopus . You guys can stop your evil plans now because these Gamma Ray Bursts already exist.
What are these Cosmic Snipers ?
If we want to understand Gamma Ray Bursts we should start understanding the electromagnetic spectrum. It is a simple chart that shows lower and higher frequency waves.
Basicly there are radiowaves , microwaves , infrared , ultraviolet , x-rays and the famous Gamma Rays to create the next green monster Hulk. As you can see its frequency and energy is pretty high and single gamma - ray photon got more energy than million visible photons. Their high energy makes them ionized radiation therefore they can easily break some bonds in atomic level so they can basicly break our DNA's bond and create mutation or cancer.
Thankfully we still got some ozone layer left to protect us from the Gamma Ray Bursts. However first GRB's discovered by some satellite 30 years ago. Appearently the current source of GRB's we are seeing is a death star which is 6 billion years away from our world. If we can see these laser bursts from that distance imagine the energy they create. According to scientists those Gamma Ray Bursts create more energy then the energy generated by 10 billion years of sunlight.
Types of Gamma Ray Bursts
There are 2 types of these chaotic death lasers short and long. Short and long GRB's got its own unique source. Long GRB'S approximetely take 1 minute. When a star is collapsing before it is turning in to a black hole it creates a super nova scientist thinks that long Gamma Ray Bursts created during that period of transformation.
Short GRB's created by a collapse of 2 Neutron Stars and they last like a second and these stars form a black hole too. Basicly these 2 type doing the same thing create a black hole and because of the form instead of spreading the explosion it can be in ray form.
Doomsday Scenario
All the current Gamma Ray Bursts spotted are pretty far away from the Milky Way and we got a cool Ozone Layer layer to protect us. However if a black hole forms somewhere few thousand light year away from us it can threat the life on the earth and it doesn't even have to directly hit us.
It can destroy entire ozone layer and it takes a lot of year to reform itself. Obviously without ozone layer we are going to face deathly rays from the sun it will melt our earth slowly and it will make our habitat unliveable.
Don't be sad if it directly hits us I'm pretty sure we won't even feel it because the energy amount is unimaginably high and it will destroy and make everything vanish it touches. So if we are going to face a Gamma Ray Burst in our solar system and directed to us we don't have much to worry because we can hop in to our space huttles and dodge it. On the other hand we may need to find another planet to live.

Could Mars have been totally or partially reached by a gamma-ray burst of some dying star at some point in the past?
It is a question that I ask myself, since theoretically a gamma ray explosion could destroy an atmosphere.
