Diamond Batteries Can Generate Power For Thousands of Years!

in #science7 years ago (edited)

Scientists from the University of Bristol Cabot Institute, have made diamonds that can generate electricity.
The diamonds are made from upcycled radioactive waste.

During the energy production in nuclear power plants, radioactive uranium is split in a process called nuclear fission.
Uranium atoms split in a controlled chain reaction, heat is generated, which vaporizes water into steam. The steam generates enectricity by spining the turbines.

During this process dangerous  radioactive waste is created. Today the radioactive waste is being stored, until it stops being radioactive, with a half-life of 5,730 years.

Scientists have found a way to turn the radioactive graphite in to diamonds. The graphite is being heated, during this process it releases radioactive gas. The gas is subjected to high temperature and low pressures that turn it into a diamond.

If we place one of those diamond placed near a radioactive field, they generate a small electrical current.

The nuclear diamond battery has an incredible lifetime, the first nuclear battery that has been made will only be half used up by the year 7746. The uses for such batteries are limitless.

The development of this technology presents an incredibly efficient way to treat radioactive waste. Within the past 40 years, the US has amassed 76,430 metric tons of this waste.
