Queen bee
The queen bee is the largest bee in the colony.. She has well developed ovaries and has long pointed abdomen designed for laying eggs.. The queen bee has the ability to lay both fertilized and unfertilized eggs. The queen bee regulates the colony.
It's mode of feeding is by receiving food from the worker bee and she is also groomed by them..
It has the ability to live for 2-3yrs or even more
The Drones
These are male bees. They have very large eyes. They are slightly larger than the queen bee but large than the worker bees..
Their main function is to mate with a virgin bee and after that they die.
The Worker bee
The worker bee are the smallest of them all
They do not lay eggs but they perform all the duties in the colony. Some worker bee clean the hives which some are responsible for air-conditioning. They stop intruders from entering the hives. They have a sting connected to a gland that is poisonous that is why the sting from a bee is very painful
Importance of bees to man:-
- Fruits and vegetables are being pollinated by honey bees
- Provides honey to man.
- The sting of a bee is medicinal.
- Bees play a major role in nature.
- They pollinate 80% of flowering plants in the world.
A single bee can pollinate close to 200million flowers everyday
