Scuba diving nowadays is considered a sport. One of the most important things you need to learn is the basics of scuba diving, safety check. The instructors will most likely monitor you on this part. It's best practice to do this with a partner or buddy, the pre diving check is performed by your buddy along with your instructor, to see if you are both fully kitted out and check each other’s apparatus.
Here are the next important things you need to learn after knowing the safety measures;
Orientation - the basics and the instructions you need to know(breathing practice, apparatus parts and its functions, etc)
Signal - hand signals
Regulator - a mouthpiece through which the air of your tank flows
Time - you need to be aware that you have sufficient air to return
Then you can start. Stay safe, always be mindful and don't forget to have fun!

Thank you for bringing that up, I forgot to mention that you can't go on scuba diving without accompanied by a licensed diver. It's an important note too!
