The fact and Mandated

One of the mandatory drills for seafarers is the shipboard general drill, which all crew members are required to attend—no exceptions. This is enforced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The ship’s alarm may sound at any time to signal a general drill, whether or not passengers are on board. The purpose of this drill is to refresh and enhance the crew’s knowledge of safety and security procedures, and to ensure they know how to respond effectively in emergency situations.

Before joining a vessel, crew members undergo required training to comply with the regulations of their respective countries or agencies. General drills may be announced or unannounced, so everyone must always be prepared. Crew members are expected to wear appropriate gear during drills, including warm clothing, an emergency card, a cap—often yellow for identification as part of the shipboard emergency team—and a life jacket. Crew must also be prepared for inspections, which can also be announced or unannounced.
