Secrets of Organ Playing Contest Week 119 Submission--Freu' dich sehr, O meine Seele by Sigfrid Karg Elert

Kind of a random piece for me today. I haven't played much of Karg Elert's music, although I know I should learn all of the Op. 65 Organ Improvisations because they seem to be just so much fun to play. The improvisation on Freu' dich sehr, O meine Seele is a highly elaborated version of the chorale tune of the same name holding the AAB form of the chorale. I sat down and briefly tried to find where the chorale tune is in the original work and found it difficult to match the two up. That being said, it is a beautiful composition in a late Romantic style. I used flutes and strings 8' on the swell with Subbass and Bourdon 8' in the pedals in the first phrase followed by 16' Quintedena, Principals 8' and 4' and Bourdon 8' for the second phrase (pedals stayed the same). In the third and fourth phrases, I added a Fugara 4' to the swell and ended with a type of cornet with tremolo on the melody in the last phrase. I did take it slightly slower than the tempo marking on the score (qn=64), but I think it works better and is more expressive at the slower speed.

Lovely. Sounds like quite a difficult piece.
