A simple way to create strong, unique and unforgettable passwords

in #security8 years ago (edited)

As we know, simple passwords are easy to hack, but strong passwords are easy to forget.
Here is a way to create strong and unforgettable ones by simple template.
For example, we need to create password for www.givemestrongpassword.com.
Assume that your nickname in school was "cool Joe" (you will never forget it) and your date of birth is 08/25/1980.
Let's compose your password:

  1. First part - "08" (month).
  2. Second part - "Givemestrongpassword" (you will never forget this part too, because it is a site address, uppercase letter is needed because of the requirements of many sites).
  3. Third part - "&" (special symbol, see p.2).
  4. Fourth part - "25" (day).
  5. Fifth part - "cooljoe".
  6. Sixth part - "1980" (year).
    ...and entirely: "08Givemestrongpassword&25cooljoe1980".
You may variate yor own template and/or add other parts that you always keep in mind.
    Good luck !

I'm up-voting you because you tried very hard, but what you have said is actually not very good advice. Why? Because the attacker only needs to find out
all of those bits of information to guess what your password is. Thus, the number of combinations they have to try is massively reduced.

The only true way to maintain security is for the password to be unguessable. For it to be unguessable it really needs to be random. Now this does make it hard to remember, but it's the price of security.

What I would actually suggest is using a password manager such as 1Password which encrypts all your other passwords behind a single password.

my advice is designed for ordinary users
i very much doubt that bad guys wants to hack a housewife's account
