GitHub hit by a DDoS attack of unparalleled magnitude to date

in #security7 years ago

Thanks to new attack technology DDOS. Cyber-attackers were able to target GitHub with a violent attack that represents the new absolute record in terms of power.

The attack in question took place on 28 February and directly targeted the GitHub collaborative development site. The service achieved a record speed of 1.35 Tbit/s! Never seen before, even during the previous particularly violent cyber attacks of 2016, which exploited the vulnerability of connected objects.

But yet, contrary to all expectations, GitHub finally did well. Engineers were able to route all inbound and outbound traffic through Akamai's Prolexic network, a company specializing in large-scale anti-DDoS protection (comparable to Google's Project Shield). As a result, the attack was brought under control in about 10 minutes and normal GitHub activity resumed. Remarkable.

According to Akamai, the GitHub attack record won't last long now that the technique is known to everyone:

" We believe that other potentially larger DDoS attacks will occur in the short term. Since it allows massive attacks to be carried out, it is likely that memcached reflection will quickly become the preferred tool of attackers."
