Establishing a Common Understanding

in #self-help8 years ago

Hello, here is my second attempt at today's Blog. While it is true, I should have backed up all my writings today, I assumed Steemit had an auto save function  for those of us who fail to remember to do so. So all my best work for today, has magically disappeared, when i was for whatever reason logged out of Steemit, only to return and find my work gone. Perhaps another thing that needs serious attention? Or is it just me? It appears that auto save only works when l9gged in which i assumed I was, not sure why i was suddenly logged out and worse there seems to be no drafts folder to go to?

This will be a shortened version, as my time for today is running out. Frustrating is too little a word. Perhaps you have experienced similar results while blogging here? Now that I have that out of the way!. Let's give it another whirl.

Let me begin by asking, why is it we assume that even though we are speaking the supposed same language with others, so many times the comments or commentators theorize over what the speaker or writer was truly trying to say? We see it all the time, others discussing what this or that person truly meant.

When it comes to the English language, especially, it seems like it is hard to come to consensus about much. Many times others may or may not reject our conclusions, due to understanding and disagreement, I say most times it is personal assumptions that get in the way of truly understanding what the author or speaker is conveying.

The list of misunderstandings, be they intentional or, is long with many  factors involved, however, the only way i know for sure to come close to or near perfect understanding is to be using the same dictionary, with the same definitions.

Most people assume that others are on the same page so to speak, when in fact, many are coming to very different conclusions, some may even be in line with the authors words. Ha. As I said, just because they are using words others can relate to,  is no  guarantee that the effect from hearing them leads to understanding, especially when words today seem to be more and more descriptive or open to change, instead of prescribed or unchanging.  Some may say well, words must adapt to change, i say; adaptations should come in the form of new words, not diluting the ones we already use, thus diluting our common language.

What this creates is not just mere confusion, but frustrations and more. We perhaps even look at others as ignorant or whatever, when in fact it is simply failures to communicate using the same definitions of words. This creates the common groundwork and community necessary for whatever unity we can create as a whole.

Also, simply because someone has a limited or  undeveloped vocabulary, such as myself, does not mean they do not have very important thoughts and ideas to convey or add to the whole, their and our problem is not always pure ignorance, but in communicating those thoughts and ideas to others, especially when words are attached to emotions which any serious writer struggles to put into proper words.

We have all heard the phrase 'it's hard to put into words; and it truly is, especially, when someone is truly passionate about any given subject. So it is always best to genuinely listen to what others are saying or trying to relate, before outright condemning or dismissing them, based purely upon their ability to use words as we do and understand as we do.

Yes, educating ourselves is important, but that does not mean others who for whatever reason have not, don't have something unique to offer us all. Of course I'm speaking from a creative point of view, sadly, many frustrated or misguided people, have nothing to add but destruction or negativity.

As for me, I was seeking the common thread and English commonly used in the formation of the American way of life that even today holds great influence on the American society and it's supposed independence from a tyrant king. So it will be easiest, if you wish to follow along with my thoughts, to use Daniel Websters 1828 dictionary as much as possible. Webster was largely credited with creating the definitions necessary to help define Americans way of thinking and life.

Secondly, and IMHO  most importantly, his understanding of words while defining came from a strong moral background and understanding. He felt strongly that without morality education was useless. A study of is life is recommended reading. So, as i progress, into many subjects such as what is love, happiness and the dynamics or causal effects and more, i will be doing my best to root these ideas and words with Websters, being of both physical and moral nature, I believe the two need to be aligned with each other for sanity to prevail.

I will also be using reference to moral based principles. Call them what you will, Natural law, Golden Rules, Common law principles, or Ten Commandments, they are key to lying the groundwork we all share in our hearts and minds about fairness and equality. You can find these common threads among most religions at their core, Sadly most go  way beyond the core issues and lose sight of them in the constant bickering and differences created from the unknowns.

The good news I want you to know is; we will  be focusing on what we can know and change, what we can control, not just mere speculations. The ongoing information I hope to provide, has been and can be life changing, as it has been my experience and the best news of all, it's simpler than most think. The road to obtaining a life in tune within ourselves and others, who choose life and love. Blessings
