404 vs 410 Redirect which is to use.

in #seo6 years ago (edited)

Many time we see 404 error in webmaster tool / search console. Whenever a page is deleted from website the search engine crawler show a 404 error. This mean the page is temporarily down or it assume that page will be back again. As per SEO aspects it does not affect your ranking but, it is not good to have too many 404 error as user click on it and see "page not found" error. Ultimately it will increase your bounce rate and indirectly result in negative impact on SEO.

While on the other hand if 410 error is applied to deleted pages, it says to bot that 'page is gone' and never come again, so that crawler do not visit that page again and again. Which will help in wasting crawler resource of search engine. Moreover the page with 410 error code will get deindexd from search results.

So if you had deleted a page permanently, it is good to have http status 410 on it. If you have some more suggestions for improving this post kindly comment your views below.
