Mobiles confuse me.

in #shorts11 months ago

I work in IT, and yet mobile phones confuse the hell out of me. It's like the dark arts designed to hide pricing, service and, in some cases, functions behind smoke and mirrors so that the end user never finds out what an utter rip-off they are.

The contract on my mobile expires next month, and IDvery kindly sent me one of their "Ooh! You expire in a couple of weeks. How about a more expensive phone?" emails. Now I've been paying £37.87 a month; to be honest, the email was bizarre in the extreme! The options were, well, unfathomable.

  • Do nothing and continue benefiting from your current services for £37.87 a month.

Aye? How's that work? I'll have paid for the hardware; why would I still be paying full whack?

  • Change to a new contract for £34.67 a month. (Extra 5GB of Data)

OK, so you're giving me an extra 5GB which, I hasten to add, I never asked for, but it's not much of a reduction, is it?

I logged into my ID app, and that gave me yet another IMV, expensive option (I forget what it was now, and the offer has now gone.), but scrolling through, I saw a deal for Unlimited texts and minutes, 25GB of Data £8.00.

Now you can't speak to anyone at ID anymore, and I was confused as hell, so I popped down to the local Currysoutlet where a smart young girl whizzed across the keyboard, handed me a new SIM and proclaimed "There you are Mr Cannon, all done."

I've just looked at my phone, and it's saying my contract ends on 23 May 2024; my bill so far is -£9.87, and my next payment is due on 26th June. I'm now confused all over again! What happened to my last payment of £37.87?

I've not generally paid for phones through my contract, but I don't want an expensive phone anyway. I do SIM only and it's a reasonable price for what I get. I never run out of data.

It’s all witchcraft, that’s what I reckon!

!PIZZA

You're not wrong.

She used promo codes to reduce your bill, I used to do it all the time when I worked Cellular customer service.

If she was doing her job right, she gave you the best balanced plan that will fit your needs based on your previous usage.

We'll see. I suspect I will need to wait until July to see how much money they take.

I had one older lady that had been ripped off for years set up so good with promo codes that her bill was -$1 per month for the remainder of her contract after I was done with her.

As long as a promotion where they get a bonus didn't get in your way you should be fine. If there's a bonus involved you may have gotten a worse deal.
