It's not always easy to get used to a new app, especially if you've been using another one for a long time. The best example of this is the switch from WhatsApp to Signal, which many users have been making since the Facebook subsidiary published its new T&Cs. That's why we'll show you here how to set Signal optimally and what features are available.
Since Messenger WhatsApp changed its T&Cs, more and more users are switching to other apps that guarantee more security and respect privacy. At the top of the list is the open-source application Signal, which is even recommended by Edward Snowden and Elon Musk and, unlike Threema, is completely free. But after many years, the changeover is not so easy for some.

After installing Signal, you may be prompted to set a Signal PIN - see below for more information. After that, as with any app, you should first check the settings to make sure they are to your liking. You open these by tapping your profile picture in the top left corner. Here you can add a profile picture from your gallery and type in the display name. Under "Appearance", you can currently only set the app's language and switch between light and dark modes.
Under "Notifications" you can set the ringtone for the signal and whether the phone should vibrate at the same time - it is recommended to turn off the notification sounds during a conversation. In the "Show" menu item, you determine whether the name and preview, only the name or neither should be displayed on the home screen. That's all it takes for the initial setup
