Today I’m going to share a coin that most probably haven’t seen. Unless you were very active on new releases in the coin world back then, I highly doubt that an LCS anywhere not associated with England would carry it.
The coin is a 2019 Valiant Saint George and the Dragon ten ounce silver coin.
Saint George and the Dragon
The famous legend of Saint George and the Dragon represents victory and honor. There are many variations of the legend, but all mention the hero Saint George traveling, where he comes across a town distressed by a dragon. The dragon has taken a princess as his prisoner. Saint George decided to help the town by slaying the beast. Saint George brandished his sword at the dragon, which is the battle depicted on this 10 oz Silver Valiant coin from The Royal Mint.
Coin Highlights:
Contains 10 oz of .9999 fine Silver.
Housed in protective plastic capsule.
Obverse: Displays the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, along with the face value of 10 pounds.
Reverse: Features St. George and the dragon from the well-known English legend. The reverse is designed by Etienne Milner, the coin's original designer.
Sovereign coin backed by the British government.
Obverse
The obverse is designed by Royal Mint coin artist Jody Clark, creator of the latest portrait of Her Majesty The Queen on UK coinage and The Queen’s Beasts Collection. It features the right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II in a guilloche design against a diamond-patterned background. “ELIZABETH II” is inscribed, along with the coin’s denomination.
Reverse
The reverse features coin artist Etienne Milner’s modern take on the medieval portrayal of St George and the Dragon. St George is clothed in full armor as he battles the evil dragon to save the Swedish princess. His white stallion rears up in alarm as he hoists his spear and pierces the monster’s neck. The iconic image is set against a diamond background pattern. New for 2019 is the coin’s weight, purity, and year of issue inscribed in a smooth border around the image.
I love this coin especially because you can see so much detail in the ten ounce version.
