1 Dollar - America's Space Age World's Fair

Back with a second World's Fair medal. I don't know how one acquired these during the fair but reading the obverse of this one it seems you could redeem it for an actual US dollar.

I guess that means any participating location would take this in trade for USD...I wonder what they did with them then? Did they have to send a bag of them to Century 21 for redemption?

Look, it's the Climate Pledge Arena next to the words "one dollar".

The reverse has some Seattle lore, including: the newly built Seattle Space Needle, the monorail, the skyline of Seattle, laurels, and a globe with the outline of Washington State xD

There are other medals out there but I only have this one and this one. They're neat and I got them because I love Seattle, but I am not collecting the rest.

This one is also made of brass, though it's a bit bigger diameter than the other one.

This is the same one I have (from Grandma’s house) but yours is in way better condition. (Mine looks like a dirty old penny. My parents told me you could buy these and either keep them as a souvenir or use them as ride/consession tokens. But $1 in 1962 seems like a hefty fee for either.

During the fair my grandpa paid to take my mom, my grandma and his mother up on a plane to fly over the space needle. It was a special thing you could buy in conjunction with fair tickets. I wonder if they took tokens? 😄

Love those stories! So you had to pay a dollar for the token, then you could redeem it for a dollar if you wanted.

I can vaguely remember my kiddie years seeing the Space Needle landmark when my parents took the family to visit a few friends in Seattle. It's like some space ship.

That's neat. I was an adult the first time I saw the mother ship Space Needle. Have you been back since?

Well, bring your flannel shirt if you ever make it down xD
