Throughout the month of July, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
Born on the 18th July 1918, Nelson Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist and politician who served 27 years in prison. After being freed in 1990 he became the President of the African National Congress (1991-97) before being elected the first black President of his country in a fully multiracial election in 1994.

The Krugerrand is a South African coin, first minted on 3 July 1967 to help market South African gold and produced by Rand Refinery and the South African Mint.
The name KRUGER-RAND is a compound of Paul Kruger, the former President of the South African Republic (depicted on the obverse), and rand, the South African unit of currency.
During the bull market in gold of the 1970s, the gold Krugerrand quickly became the primary choice for gold investors worldwide.Between 1974 and 1985, it is estimated that 22 million gold Krugerrand coins were imported into the United States alone. This huge success of the Krugerrand encouraged other gold-producing countries to mint and issue gold bullion coins of their own.
Other countries soon followed suit including:
- the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf in 1979,
- the Australian Nugget in 1987,
- the Chinese Gold Panda in 1982,
- the American Gold Eagle in 1986,
- and the British Britannia coin in 1987.
So its safe to say that the Krugerrand is the OG of 1oz gold bullion coin, andnis still onenof my favourite.
