Throughout the month of July, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.
On 23 July 1971 a southern extension to the Victoria Line was opened, connecting Highbury to Brixton. The line had a very royal passenger when Princess Alexandra, who opened the line, made a journey from Brixton to Vauxhall.
2013 London Underground Roundel Piedfort £2 Silver Proof Coin
Back in 2013, the Royal Mint released a Limited Issue London Underground Roundel Piedfort £2 Two Pound Silver Proof Coin struck in solid .925 Sterling Silver to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the London Underground. The reverse designed by Edwina Ellis depicts the London Underground Roundel Logo while the obverse design is the stunning portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank Broadley.
The Proof, 2013, Piedfort silver coin will set you back around £300. The Piedfort coin are highly prozed amongst coin collectors. Not only for their scarcity, but for there sheer size when compared to normal coins of the same design. Piedfort coins are usually twice as thick as standard proof coins, and so contain double tohe amounts of precious metals.
