A coin for every occasion: 28th Jkly 1866 - The tales of Peter Rabbit author born

Throughout the month of July, ill be looking back at historical moments from the past. From conflicts to coronations, sporting moments to royal memories, and famous firsts and lasts, with my love of all things shiny and precious, ill be trying to tie these events in with coins that have been created to commemorate these moments.

Helen Beatrix Potter was born on 28 July 1866. Her love of the natural world inspired the much-loved storybooks, both written and illustrated by Beatrix.

The little tales have been passed down through generations as a firm family favourite, and in 2016 a 50p coin series began, featuring Peter Rabbit and some of his furry, feathered and prickly friends.

The 2016 and original coloured coin, from the Royal mint, started it all.... The first in the series, the silver proof 50p coin was sold by the royal mint for £55 when they were first released all those years back. Coin collectors, silver collectors and fans of the books were quick to snap up the full 15000 mintage on the morning they were released, crashing tbe Royal Minta website for a few hours.

I was fortunate enough to pick up my full household allocation of 3. Prices quickly skyrocketed on the secondary market, with all the hype driving prices as high at £1900/2000 per coin.....

I did sell one for £1400 and reinvented that straight back in to bullion silver, and have kept 2 for my kids. Prices have dropped back to the £500/550 range, which is still a fantastic return on am original £55 investment.
