I've never eaten a wood ear, but I'm fascinated by them. Whenever conditions are right and I have the time I enjoy walks through the forest observing them and whatever other mushrooms I can find.
I agree that their form can be somewhat strange, even unsettling in their similarity to human ears. It makes me imagine the trees are listening sometimes, even if the ears are often pointed toward the ground.
Maybe they ARE listening hehe
