Motorola is ready to bounce back with its Moto Z4, and in the thick of wide speculation, we try to bring you how different it will be and what will it cost. Though the picture is still fuzzy but what we can make out in the grey area is that this smartphone is the fourth iteration of its flagship Android phone and one can clearly see the contacts for its modular Moto Mods accessories on the back of this alleged phone.
New Moto Mods were released at a snail’s pace in the last few years that the initiative seemed like a touch and go attempt. Back then only 2017’s Moto Z2 Play was able to make waves while a promising fold-out keyboard (which was developed by a third-party company) was canceled in 2018. In an statement to a tech magazine at that time, Motorola insisted that it would continue working on Mods for the very foreseeable future.
But other than the 5G Moto Mod, which is now available for preorder and only compatible with Verizon’s yet-to-launch consumer 5G network, Mods do not seem to create a stir. So, it is possible that the Moto Mods attachment point may exist merely to content past customers rather than exciting new ones, but we’ll have to wait until more information leaks out to get a bigger, better picture.
Moving on, Publication 91mobiles has spilled a few more beans. The 2019 model may use a fast Snapdragon 855 processor to pacify the phone enthusiasts who felt burned by last year’s Moto Z3 which used the older Snapdragon 835 while other flagship phones opted for the Snapdragon 845.
The Moto Z4 pictured in the leak from 91mobiles appears to have a teardrop notch, new to the Z line but similar to the one found in this year’s Moto G7. It is speculated that Moto may opt for an in-display fingerprint reader instead of embedding one in the side of the phone, which it did last time with the Moto Z3. Reviewing Z3 last year, Chris Welch of The Verge said that the side-mounted reader was “very awkward to use,” and while an in-display option might reduce the problem, it may not necessarily be better. The Samsung Galaxy S10’s in-display solution was not convenient as it was slower than before, though Moto may figure out a way to improve it.
If the rumors are to be believed, then this smartphone possesses a 48-megapixel Sony sensor. Although it remains to be seen how a single-lens system performs at portrait shots with a lot of bokeh.
Moreon, the Moto Z4 is expected to come with a Snapdragon 845 chipset, ready to hit the markets in August or September this year at a price under US$500 (about £380, AU$700).
However, it is unlikely that Z4 will follow the Motorola tradition of releasing variants of Plus, Play, and Force that the company has pursued from the budget Moto E up to the premium Moto Z.
Instead, Motorola could position the Snapdragon 845-powered Moto Z4 as a 5G-ready smartphone while also releasing a Snapdragon 855-powered Moto Z4 5G with Qualcomm’s X50 modem for 5G. That change wouldn’t require the new phone to use the 5G Moto Mod to enable 5G connectivity.
At last, we will give our final verdict on Moto Z4 once the picture gets clear and prices gets locked down.
