I got tired of my I-Leash
My I-Phone was close to giving up the ghost. My primary phone was an I-Phone ProMax 12 that I've had 4+ years. I've dropped it on the pavement a dozen or more times and it has seen much better days.
I finally bit the bullet and selected a replacement, not the newest or greatest but an I-Phone 15 relatively basic phone.
Somewhere in the past two years I've realized I want to be on my phone much less. If I'm going to lay in bed and read I'm more likely to reach for a laptop now, which I installed Linux on a few months back after reading a post from @themarkymark
I use Mint btw.
That may change in the future to a more l33t distro but it's serviceable for now.
Back to the phone. As I was setting it up, it occurred to me I could not install X(Twitter), I could just not install Facebook etc. I even deleted the YouTube app that was preinstalled.
Mobile devices are handy, but they also seem to constrain awareness, harm cognition, and diminish meaningful interactions with other people.
When I'm lying I'm on my deathbed, I likely won't regret missing out on doom scrolling through low value content.
Exceptions
Engaging with legacy social media has some utility, but it should likely done more deliberately and moderately. I can do that from the laptop or my desktop.
I mainly want my phone to be a phone, occasionally a map, and frequently a display for my heartrate monitor in the gym.
I did install @ecency and the @keychain applications so that I can interact with Hive on the go, if it's needful or productive.
Just tested posting to "Snaps" via the Keychain app on the phone, it was snappy.
Mint is a fine distro. I have been using Bazzite, which is immutable, gaming focused. I grew tired of Green Ubuntu. :P
I keep threatening to nuke my SSD and try Arch, but I am fairly confident in debian based distros, I feel like Bazzite (being Fedora based) should get me familiar with that side of the world, before moving onto Arch one day. Marky keeps telling me to go straight to Arch and get the pain out of the way - maybe I should. Maybe I should.
I uninstalled the reddit app on my phone. I don't use twitter. I keep Facebook and Instagram as sadly, they are the main places that I get (and can generate) leads for my photography business.
That may all change in the coming days and weeks, and month - as the Australian government looks to introduce a ban on social media for under 16s, which also means that in order to verify / validate - the social media networks will require adult users to do a KYC process.
Part of the reason I spend more of my time on HIVE now. There's real potential here.
In regards to phone choice - I've been an Android user all my life, but I do have a Macbook and an iPad, because they're best in class devices - but I have never tried an iPhone.
I'm almost tempted to try one of the BSDs next. Thought I might put together a system for that, to ensure the hardware is compatible.
The distro hop-scotch is a game. If it works, my viewpoint, since my prior, and now this comment is - why change it? I'm only going to change when I am truly dissatisfied with the limitations of my current OS.
@alohaed, I paid out 1.381 HIVE and 0.274 HBD to reward 2 comments in this discussion thread.
