I wish modern programmers were as dedicated to optimization and "trimming fat" as retro game devs have to be due to hardware limitations. Modern computers have so much RAM and storage that sloppy work too often gets a pass. DOOM has been ported to almost everything because it has good code. Old Nintendo carts demonstrate how to optimize in assembly. Necessity is the mother of invention.
