The founder of the museum is the famous researcher of the Kuban Yevgenia Dmitrievich Felitsyn, a local historian, statistician, scientist, military leader, author of more than 90 scientific works, author of a unique archaeological map of antiquities of the Kuban region, published in 1882 by the Imperial Moscow Archaeological Society. Felitsyn's works contributed to the formation and development of modern historical and toponymic ideas about the Kuban Cossacks.

In 1879, objects of archeology, ethnography, paleontology and geology, collected by the scientist, were located in a separate room in the premises of the Kuban Regional Statistical Committee. The museum began with this collection.
