The Zakheim Gate, as part of the defensive ring, was built in the middle of the 19th century on the site of old wooden fortifications. This is one of the seven city gates that have survived to this day, and there were eight gates in total. A single defense system - an earthen rampart - encircled the city, the gates closed the passages, as if carved into the body of the earth. They were locked at night, a guard was posted. From dusk to dawn, entry into the city was prohibited, with the exception of doctors and priests.
