César Lombroso, famoso criminalista y psiquiatra italiano de comienzos de siglo, relata en su obra Después De La Muerte, ¿Qué?, el caso de una niña de catorce años, normal en todos sus aspectos hasta que de pronto sufrió ataques de histeria. No respondió al tratamiento, y su condición empeoro notablemente. Tres meses después del primer ataque quedó completamente ciega.

Desarrolló entonces una sorprendente habilidad para ver, aunque sus ojos no funcionasen. El doctor Lombroso hizo varias pruebas que demostraron algo asombroso: ¡la muchacha veía por su nariz y por los lóbulos de las orejas! Para eliminar la posibilidad de que interviniesen los ojos, Lombroso los vendó con todo cuidado. Sin embargo, la niña pasó la prueba con éxito.
Contaba Lombroso que la niña era incluso capaz de identificar los colores. Cuando ponían una luz fuerte cerca de la oreja, se la cubría con las manos y gritaba enojada:
- ¡Es que me quieren dejar ciega! ...
