When blackberries are ripe, they have a dark, almost black colour. On the other hand, those that are still to ripen and are colloquially called "green" are red. It is just a play on words, where green does not refer to the colour but to the state of ripeness of the fruit.

Today, many children know this fruit from the jelly bean that bears its name. I'm sure that if some of them were to try the wild fruit, they would find it bland or tasteless, compared to the intense sweetness of the jelly bean. I like them both, but it goes without saying that the original blackberries are much healthier as they contain different vitamins such as A, B and C, helping our immune system, they are antioxidants and keep bad cholesterol at bay. They are not only a pleasure to eat, but also "medicinal".

However, the importance of these fruits and all those we see appearing in autumn in organic niven is fundamental. Numerous species of birds and mammals feed on them, with blackberries being a delicacy for foxes, genets and numerous small birds, which at this time of year can also be found on migration.

The blackberry plant also has a curious strategy which consists of making its fruits ripen in a staggered manner. In the same "bunch" of fruits we can find red and unripe fruits and black fruits ready to be eaten, and this different stage guarantees a longer supply of food over time and the visit of a greater number of species during the season.

Although from our anthropocentric point of view we believe we are in control, in the case of plants that use animals to disperse their seeds (zoochory) it is they who use us.
