I believe what you are witnessing is a slain giant as he falls to the ground.
A large temple was built for him to stand upon and he is a giant, so he will take a long time to reach the ground.
As he falls he reaches out to grab onto anything within his reach, he feels the useless desperation and hope that dying men feel; that stopping the fall will heal the wound and save his life.
The sad reality is that those he grabs along the way fall harder as the giant swings away and will be crushed under his enormous body when he hits the ground and will be forgotten by most before his skin begins to turn gray.
The impact he makes on the ground will shake the earth and throw many, who escaped his desperate blows, to their deaths.
