Me ha costado mucho escribir esta publicación. Los sentimientos se me agolpan y he tardado 6 meses en terminarla.
En la última etapa, llegué emocionado hasta la plaza del Obradoiro en Santiago de Compostela, el final del Camino.
Frente a la fachada limpia y restaurada, sollozando, deseé abrazar a Javier agonizante y hacerle partícipe del logro que habíamos conseguido. Grabé el momento con el móvil y se lo envié porque el Camino lo hicimos juntos y quería que sintiera nuestro triunfo.
Hemos caminado conectados por un hilo astral que nos unió. Lo constaté cuando le mostré en su lecho final la “Compostela” que conseguimos juntos. Noté su curiosidad al verla y su emoción de haber triunfado.
El Camino Portugués por la costa es el que hemos culminado y lo iniciamos en Oporto, en el año 2019. Por falta de tiempo, lo dejamos inconcluso en Vigo pero con el compromiso de retomarlo al año siguiente. Este camino lo denominamos “Camino Javideo” y lo hicimos en homenaje a nuestro amigo enfermo. Por ello, era muy importante terminarlo y que él supiera que lo hicimos antes de que nos dejara.
Entré en la plaza del Obradoiro muy emocionado, acompañado del intenso sonido de las gaitas. Llegué al centro y luego al fondo, a los soportales. Desde allí, pude tener una buena panorámica de la fachada y admiré, con lágrimas en el corazón, la catedral rejuvenecida.
El año 2021 es Año Santo, también llamado Año Xacobeo, porque la festividad de Santiago Apóstol, el 25 de julio, coincide en domingo.
Por eso, la catedral ha sufrido una completa restauración con el fin de estar limpia y renovada para celebrar el Año Santo. Por fin, se han quitado los andamios que cubrían la fachada estos los últimos años.
También, se ha restaurado y policromado el Pórtico de la Gloria pero sólo se puede acceder a él pagando una entrada y con cita previa. En el 2018, después de esperar tres horas al sol, con mucho calor, lo pude contemplar renovado.
Llegué al Obradoiro un poco después del mediodía. Tras contemplar la fachada, fui a la Oficina del Peregrino, con la intención de conseguir la ansiada “Compostela”.
Para mi sorpresa, me encontré con que había una multitud esperando para este mismo trámite. Después de completar todos los formularios digitales, me dieron el número 964. Para mi desgracia, comprobé desolado que, en ese momento, estaban atendiendo al número 355. Esto hacía que fuera prácticamente imposible poder conseguirla pues, al ritmo que iban, tendría que esperar unas cinco horas y mi avión salía antes.
Así que decidí ducharme y ir a comer algo. No tenía mucha hambre.
Me quedé muy sorprendido de la cantidad de gente que formaba colas para poder acceder a la Catedral, así que pensé que tampoco podría entrar a verla.
Hice unas cuantas fotos de la Puerta Santa. Esta entrada sólo se abre los años Xacóbeos y da acceso directo a la cripta donde reposan los restos del apóstol.
La puerta es de bronce oscuro y en ella hay esculpidas los detalles mas importantes de la vida del apóstol Santiago. El que difundió el mensaje de Cristo por la península ibérica.
Santiago el Mayor fue uno de los apóstoles más importantes. Junto con Pedro y Juan compusieron el círculo más íntimo y cercano a Jesús.
Tras la crucifixión de Cristo, cruzó el mar Mediterráneo llegando a Cartagena y, desde allí, comenzó a evangelizar la Península Ibérica.
Estando Santiago recorriendo tierras aragonesas, se le apareció la Virgen María subida en un pilar. Por eso, la imagen que está en la Catedral de Zaragoza, junto al Ebro, se lláma la Virgen del Pilar y es la Patrona de España y la Hispanidad.
Tras evangelizar la península ibérica, el apóstol Santiago regresó a Jerusalén. En esa época, el rey de Judea era Herodes Agripa I y efectuó una serie de persecuciones a los cristianos. En una de ellas, capturó al apóstol condenándolo a morir decapitado. El cuerpo del mártir fue arrojado fuera de la ciudad para que lo devoran los perros, pero sus discípulos, Atanasio y Teodoro, lo recogieron y huyeron a Hispania con el fin de enterrarlo en la misma tierra que evangelizó.
Encontré una mesa en una terraza y aproveché para sentarme. Por primera vez, descansé bebiendo una cerveza y comiendo unos pimientos del padrón. Mientras, hice un repaso de mis recuerdos, de lo que había sido el camino este año junto a mi mejor amigo.
Eran cerca de las 3:00 de la tarde. Mientras miraba absorto la plaza, observé que las filas y las demoras para entrar a la catedral se iban reduciendo y concluí que posiblemente no tendría que esperar tanto. Así que, más animado, pagué lo consumido y entré rápidamente al templo. Entré por la puerta Santa que sólo se abre los años Xacóbeos.
También, se puede entrar por una puerta lateral. No se hace por el Pórtico de la Gloria, que sería lo natural, sino por una puerta tiene un pórtico que, aunque es antiguo, no es muy vistoso. Es un “puzzle” de piezas románicas que parecen rellenar simplemente el espacio. Hay pórticos mucho más bonitos que este.
Con tanto proteger el Pórtico de la Gloria y tanto querer cobrar entradas y hacer negocio con él, han desvirtuado el mensaje y desfavorecido la llegada del peregrino hasta el Santo. Cuando hice el camino en el año 2005 fue mucho más emocionante. Ahora, el acceso es por un lado y no desde la plaza del Obradoiro. Me enfada porque ahora todo es un negocio.
Al entrar, lo primero que encontré distinto fue el color de las columnas porque han sido restauradas y ahora lucen unos colores muy intensos y dorados.
El altar mayor es un enorme monumento barroco que se construyó cuando se modernizó la antigua Catedral románica del s. XII.
El altar me resulta extremadamente majestuoso. Es tan grande que se me dispersa la atención. Sólo, mirándolo desde muy lejos, puedo comprender de qué se compone su estructura.
Es un escenario teatral gigantesco, muy recargado. Consiste en un baldaquín sujetado por 36 columnas salomónicas doradas y, sobre ellas, unos ángeles enormes que levantan la plataforma con sus brazos. En el centro se sitúa en alto el altar mayor, donde se encuentra la figura efectuada en el siglo XIII del apóstol Santiago. Tiene un hábito de peregrino y una capa con conchas labradas. Mira hacia el Pórtico de la Gloria, sereno y sencillo, sonriente, recibiendo a los sufridos peregrinos. Su expresión parece comprensiva y contenta por el esfuerzo recompensado.
En el centro, se encuentra colgado el Botafumeiro que se pone en marcha sólo en muy contadas ocasiones mediante un sistema de poleas del siglo XVI.
Todos los días de este año Xacobeo, a las 12:00 y a las 19:30, hay una Misa del Peregrino donde el botafumeiro entra en acción, tras terminar la misa. Su función era purificar y perfumar el templo puesto que aquí llegaban multitudes de sudorosos peregrinos faltos de higiene.
Por la pandemia, actualmente no se puede cumplir con la tradición ansiada de los peregrinos que consiste en subir al camarín para abrazar al Santo. Yo he tenido la suerte de poderlo hacer en dos ocasiones.
Lo cuerdo emocionado y me viene a la mente la vista de la nave central, contemplándola, mientras abrazaba al Santo.
Lo que sí pude hacer fue bajar a la cripta para visitar las reliquias del Apóstol. Estas se guardan en un pequeño mausoleo subterráneo. Están dentro de una urna de plata que fue labrada en el siglo XIX.
La cripta es la parte más antigua. Es el antiguo panteón romano original sobre el que el arzobispo Gelmírez construyó, en el siglo XII, la primera catedral románica.
Salí de la cripta y me dirigí al fondo de la nave, a la espalda del Pórtico de la Gloria y desde allí contemplé el altar a lo lejos. Luce magnífico.
Después de aquí, esperé lo que pude para intentar conseguir la Compostela pero finalmente no fue posible. Como salía mi avión, tuve que rendirme e irme al aeropuerto. Tendré que volver, en otra ocasión, para certificar el Camino y conseguir esta Compostela que tanto nos ha costado.
Me apena que Javier no pudiera ver la Compostela auténtica del Camino que denominamos “Javideo”. Si pudo ver otra que yo tenía de una peregrinación anterior. La miró con curiosidad, mucha atención y con el orgullo de que este Camino y nuestra vida la recorrimos juntos.
“Te he sentido conmigo todo el rato”, le dije.
Entonces, cerró los ojos y lloramos juntos no queriendo separarnos.
The end of the Camino
I have had a hard time writing this post. The feelings overwhelm me and it took me 6 months to finish it.
In the last stage, I got excited to the Obradoiro square in Santiago de Compostela, the end of the Camino.
In front of the clean and restored facade, sobbing, I wanted to hug Javier dying and share in the achievement we had achieved. I recorded the moment with my mobile and sent it to him because we did the Camino together and I wanted him to feel our triumph.
We have walked connected by our hearts and minds. Perhaps, an astral thread united us. I confirmed it when I showed him the Compostela that we achieved together on his final bed. I noticed his curiosity to see her and his excitement at having succeeded.
The Portuguese Way along the coast is the one that we have completed and we started in Porto in 2019. Due to lack of time, we left it unfinished in Vigo but with the commitment to resume it the following year. We called this road the Javideo Road and we did it in homage to our sick friend. That is why it was very important to finish it and for him to know that we finished it before it was left to us.
I entered the Plaza del Obradoiro very excited, accompanied by the loud sound of the bagpipes. I was surprised that there were a lot of people. I got to the center and then I went to the back, to have a good panoramic view of the façade and, from the arcades, I admired the rejuvenated cathedral with tears in my heart.
The year 2021 is the Holy Year, also called the Xacobeo year, because the feast of Santiago Apóstol, on July 25, coincides on Sunday.
For this reason, in the previous years, the cathedral has undergone a complete restoration in order to be ready and renovated to celebrate the Holy year. At last, the scaffolding on the façade that has covered it for the last few years has been removed.
Also, the Pórtico de la Gloria has been restored and polychrome but it can only be accessed by paying a ticket and by appointment. In 2018, after waiting three hours in the sun, with a lot of heat, I was able to contemplate it renewed.
I arrived at the Obradoiro a little before one in the afternoon. I did not entertain myself much, I took a few photos and went quickly to the pilgrim's office with the intention of getting the long-awaited "Compostela" as soon as possible.
To my surprise, I found that there was a crowd waiting in line for this very procedure. After completing all the digital forms using my mobile, they gave me the number 964. To my misfortune, I saw devastated that, at that moment, they were attending to number 355. This made it practically impossible to get "La Compostela" as I would have to wait about five hours and my plane back was leaving earlier.
So I decided to shower and go get something to eat. He wasn't very hungry.
I was very surprised by the amount of people who formed queues to access the Cathedral, so I thought that I would not be able to enter to see it either.
I took a few photos of the Holy Door. This access only opens the Xacóbeos years and gives direct access to the crypt where the remains of the apostle rest.
The door is made of dark bronze and in it there are sculpted solid plates where the most important details of the life of the Apostle Santiago are related, who spread the message of Christ throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
James the elder was one of the most important apostles and was, together with Peter and John, a component of the most intimate and closest circle to Jesus.
After the crucifixion of Christ, he crossed the Mediterranean Sea arriving in Cartagena and from there began to evangelize the Iberian Peninsula.
While Santiago was touring Aragonese lands, the Virgin Mary appeared to him on a pillar. For this reason, the virgin who is in the cathedral of Zaragoza, next to the Ebro, is called the Virgen del Pilar and she is the patron saint of Spain and Hispanidad.
After evangelizing the Iberian Peninsula, the Apostle Santiago returned to Jerusalem. At that time, the king of Judea was Herod Agrippa I and he carried out a series of persecutions against Christians. In one of them, he captured the apostle by condemning him to die beheaded. The martyr's body was thrown outside the city to be eaten by dogs, but his disciples, Athanasius and Theodore, picked it up and fled to Hispania in order to bury it in the same land that he evangelized.
I found a table on a terrace and took the opportunity to sit down. For the first time, I rested drinking a beer and eating some padrón peppers. Meanwhile, I did a review of my memories of what the road had been this year.
It was around 3:00 in the afternoon. As I gazed at the square, I observed that the lines and delays to enter the cathedral were decreasing and I concluded that I might not have to wait that long. So, more encouraged, I paid what I consumed and quickly entered the temple. I entered through the Holy door that only opens during Xacóbeos years.
You can also enter through a side door that is the usual access door, since the entrance is not currently through the Pórtico de la Gloria, which would be natural, but through a door has a porch that is old but not very colorful. It is a “puzzle” of Romanesque pieces that seem to simply fill the space. There are Romanesque porticoes much more beautiful than this one.
With so much protecting the Pórtico de la Gloria and so much wanting to collect tickets and do business with it, they have distorted the message and disadvantaged the pilgrim's arrival to the Saint. When I did the road in 2005 it was much more exciting. Now, access is from one side and not from Plaza del Obradoiro. They have no shame and now everything is a business.
Upon entering, the first thing I found different was the color of the columns because they have been restored and now they look very intense and golden colors.
The main altar is a huge Baroque monument that was built when the old Romanesque Cathedral of the s. XII.
The altar is extremely majestic to me and it is so large that my attention is scattered and only, looking at it from far away, can I understand what its structure is made of.
It is a gigantic theatrical stage, very ornate. It consists of a canopy supported by 36 golden Solomonic columns and, above them, huge angels who lift the platform with their arms. In the center the main altar is located high, where the figure made in the XIII century of the apostle Santiago is located. He has a Pilgrim's habit and a cape with carved shells. He looks towards the Portico de la Gloria, serene and simple, smiling, welcoming the long-suffering pilgrims. His expression seems sympathetic and pleased with your rewarded effort.
In the center is the Botafumeiro hanging, which is started only very rarely by means of a pulley system designed in the 16th century.
Every day of this Xacobeo year, at 12:00 and 19:30, there is a Pilgrim's Mass where the botafumeiro comes into action, after finishing the mass. Its function was to purify and perfume the temple since crowds of sweaty pilgrims arrived here, lacking in hygiene.
Due to the pandemic, it is currently not possible to fulfill the long-awaited tradition of the pilgrims, which consists of going up to the dressing room to embrace the Saint. I have been lucky enough to be able to do it twice.
I remember him excitedly and the sight of the central nave comes to mind, contemplating it, while embracing the Saint.
What I was able to do was go down to the crypt to visit the relics of the Apostle. These are kept in a small underground mausoleum. They are inside a silver urn that was carved in the 19th century.
The crypt is the oldest part. It is the ancient original Roman pantheon on which Archbishop Gelmírez built, in the 12th century, the first Romanesque cathedral.
I left the crypt and went to the back of the nave, behind the Pórtico de la Gloria and from there I contemplated the altar in the distance, it looks magnificent.
After here, I waited as long as I could to try to get the Compostela but finally it was not possible. As my plane was leaving, I had to give up and go to the airport. I will have to return, on another occasion, to certify the Way and get this Compostela that has cost us so much.
It saddens me that Javier couldn't see the authentic Compostela on the Camino that we call “Javideo”. If he could see another that I showed him and that I had from a previous pilgrimage. Thus he could see a Compostela. He looked at her with curiosity, a lot of attention and with the pride that this Path and our life we traveled together.
"I felt you with me the whole time," I told him.
Then he closed his eyes and we cried together.

For the photography I use my iPhone X. For edition I use the Snapseed application and for the digital signature the Watermark app.
Everything I did on my mobile phone, I did not use the computer at all.
For the drawings, I use the Sketches program and paint them on the tablet.

Me encantaron las fotos. Tengo pendiente hacer el camino en bicicleta este verano :)
Muy buena opción, aunque mi me gusta más hacerlo a pie. Así puedes disfrutar del sonido de los pájaros, del agua en los arroyos, de charlar mientras caminas, sin estar atento a no pillar una piedra que te tire al suelo. Pero hay mucha gente que lo hace y disfruta mucho. Es muy bueno, para hacerlo en bicicleta, este camino que yo hice: el camino de Santiago Portugués por la costa.

Hola @volcandemorcilla , a medida que voy leyendo voy mirando las fotos y de igual manera imaginando el esfuerzo realizado por ustedes ,la parte que dices que todo es un negocio , es cierto , hasta en estos lugares tan sagrados , también me imaginé tu rostro al ver el número que tenías , pero me gustó leer que lograste entrar y también compartir lo que hay dentro y su restauración , lo lograste y es lo más importante .
Así fue. Después de tanto esfuerzo no esperaba esas aglomeraciones que no encontré a lo largo de todo el camino.

Me alegra saber de ti @volcandemorcilla, agradezco que hayas vuelto a escribir y a mostrarnos tus hermosas fotografías y sobre todo poder compartir tu sentimiento. Este camino fue diferente, así lo siento y en esta ultima entrega que nos haces hoy me doy cuenta del motivo. Tu percepción de las cosas también cambió y la emoción que describes.
Es muy duro y a la vez loable el significado de tu camino y ahora has de sentirte en paz.
Comparto plenamente la incomodidad de sentir que demasiados ornamentos no es la respuesta que buscamos los peregrinos pero... nadie tiene la razón plena en sus manos.
