In this week’s Battle Mage Secrets, we look at the Rise of the Commons ruleset and see what strategy works when you can only use Common and Rare units in battle. Important to note that this doesn't affect summoners, so you are free to use Legendary summoners for this one.
For this battle, I've gone with Alric Stormbringer as my summoner for the +1 magic attack boost. Also, this battle being limited to only Common and Rare cards, I felt that magic attacks would be more potent.
1st position - Goblin Mech - A powerful tank from a much older era. Once upgraded, it has the useful piercing ability to get through opponents' shields
2nd position - Prismatic Energy - Another old card. I wanted it for repelling any magic attacks and also because it has a lot of health that my opponent would have to wear down
3rd position - Sea Genie - Decent magic attack for only 6 mana and also with the Flying ability to evade enemy attacks
4th position - Riverboat Captain - Going for some explosive attack with this one
5th position - Scavo Technomancer - More explosive damage although weaker than the Riverboat Captain
6th position - Venari Wavesmith - Very important for the strategy to protect against melee damage with its Protect ability
The battle strategy worked more or less as expected but there were some surprises. The biggest one being that I dodged my opponent's attacks multiple times. And that's the downside of relying on melee or range attacks as opposed to magic attacks. If my opponent hadn't missed 2 attacks during the battle, the outcome might have been different, or at least a lot closer.
The blast attacks were helping to kill off my opponent's units but the most important in my opinion was withstanding his initial onslaught and the +2 shield from the Wavesmith's Protect ability helped immensely. Once his units started dying, there was a domino effect with each round accelerating the damage.
