I have multiple reasons for doing some effort in onboarding new players.
- Affiliate Earnings I never shy away from using referral links if it involves projects I actually like and use or am invested in myself. Splinterlands certainly is one of those as I genuinely have enjoyed playing this game daily for around 1 year now. The game pays 5% of in-game purchases from referred players which have come in very handy to expand my own collection growing in the game. Since it's way cheaper to buy cards directly on the market and packs with DEC which doesn't count as a referral payout, the overall incentive that the game is currently offering is quite disappointing though.
- Helping The Game Grow: Unlike most other crypto games, I see Splinterlands as something players would actually enjoy playing even if there were no considerable rewards attached to it. Right now, we are still very early on and the game can use every new player in order to grow momentum.
- Helping New Players Grow: If I didn't know Splinterlands myself, I would love it if someone would introduce me to it so I could try it out for free and get a good early advantage from a monthly sign-up deal in case I would get into it.
From the data that I have available, I'm actually blown away on how many of the ones that ended up buying the Summoner's Spellbook keep on playing the game. That number is currently over 60% after 6 months. If anything, it really speaks for the game and from the personal feedback I have gotten, most are quite impressed by what the game has to offer.
This is the progression I made the last 4 months...

The percentage of players that sign up without playing at least 5+ games continues to be way too high and I hope the team managed to fix this by for example making some kind of walkthrough tutorial where new players can earn some loot chests by completing it.
These are the numbers since I started onboarding players from the last 2 seasons. I also included the total collection value based on the DEC cards that can be converted to so it gives a clear view of what to expect in terms in terms of season ranking based on the collection value.
Total Referral Earnings
When it comes down to referral earnings, I keep track of those in my monthly Splinterlands Results & Earnings Reports (See June 2020). Most affiliate earnings came from a handful of players who really got into the game. It's hard to calculate the exact earnings since values go up and down all the time. In total, I roughly earned ~166$ so far in affiliate earnings. Nearly all of them were used to buy extra cards so I can improve on the sign-up deal I'm offering each month (See Below).
100 PLAYERS ONBOARDING GOAL : 34/100
Important: Treat games in the first place as games and not as investment opportunities, Splinterlands allows you to earn some money and get good returns but you are much better off flipping burgers in Mcdonalds when looking at the money earned for the time invested.

Costanza! Hi!
I love these posts!
So... yes, that "Played 0-3 Games" section is rough.😬
But! Good news! It was just announced today in the (now regular) AMA in Splinterlands Discord (Fridays 3PM EST) that we're working on a tutorial that will 'go-along' with players.
Not this exactly, but something like this. 👇 Where there's a character that pops up and tells you what to do.
I've also been working on short, concise (1-3 minute) tutorials that walk through the basics of all things "Splinterlands".
We understand where we're not as strong- and we're working on it. 💪
As far as your other numbers- they are pretty great. I mean, 60% retention is good... we could maybe do better. 😉 It won't be for everyone, so it's nice to have the free option to check it out.
I really appreciate these posts!
Thank you for taking the time!
Imma send you some booster packs! Hope you get something fabulous!
😍 @carrieallen
Thanks @carrieallen❤ I got 3 Epic cards and also some Summoners which are always useful from the untamed packs you gifted me!
Nice to read that the team is working on improving the initial experience for players who go in not wanting to use any initial mental power. The game is quite addictive once you get past a certain point which shows in the excellent retention rate. I guess the fact that everyone in my list pretty much got a head start due to the extra leased cards helps as they have an easy time crushing it early on. Maybe it's even an idea to have the initial ranked games be played against bots that on purpose play horribly so new players get that dopamine rush winning match after match getting hooked before they even started the real ranked games.
I'm looking forward to seeing the changes being implemented. In the meantime, I continue to buy some cheap cards on the market while stacking DEC :-)
Thanks for sharing! - @xawi
that's really nice thank you so much for showing such supprt
