I usually go for Death splinters when I want a “sure” win in Splinterlands. It’s my comfort pick, and past victories probably made me a little biased. Today I decided to challenge that bias by entering Frontier with Earth instead. Could it keep up with my trusty Death builds?
Short answer: yes.
Longer answer: it depends on strategy, especially monster selection and positioning, not on any one splinter being “the strongest.” That’s the lesson this match thought me.
Why I Switched It Up
As I was writing this post, it hit me how silly it is to believe one splinter dominates every matchup. The game is designed around balance and rulesets. If I want consistent wins, I need to adapt my lineups, not force the same splinter every time. So, Earth it was... time to see if it can deliver the same edge I usually get from Death.
My Earth Lineup (Frontier Ranked)
Summoner: Aurelia for the +1 Health to all allies
I picked Aurelia to increase my team’s survivability. That extra HP often buys another round for my backline to work.
1) Dread Tafarian (Tank)
High health plus sustain. He’s the monster that lets the rest of the squad do their jobs.
2) Mad Gearhead (Reach)
Second slot bruiser. Reach lets him smack the enemy frontline while Tafarian holds the frontline, perfect synergy.
3) Great Bear Druid (Hybrid DPS)
Decent health, magic pressure, and melee when needed. He’s my flexible bridge between front and back.
4) Time Bandit (Cleanse support)
Keeps my frontline free from nasty status effects. Clearing debuffs on my tank can swing a close fight.
5) Kicking Roc (Ranged finisher)
A simple job: deal damage. With solid ranged attack, it punishes anything that makes it past mid-game.
Result? Victory! The lineup felt smooth, and Earth reminded me it can absolutely win Frontier battles when planned right.
Positioning Was the Difference
I’ve been learning (sometimes the hard way) that positioning > raw power. Today’s win reinforced a few rules I’m trying to stick to:
- Tank eats first. A self-sustaining frontline like Dread Tafarian buys precious time.
- Reach in slot 2 is premium. Mad Gearhead contributes real damage immediately instead of waiting to step up.
- Protect your damage. Great Bear Druid in the middle and Kicking Roc at the back keep my threats alive longer.
- Cleanse matters. Time Bandit quietly wins fights by removing crippling effects that would otherwise melt my tank.
What I Learned (and Will Keep Doing)
- No splinter is king in every battle. Matchups, mana, and rulesets will punish autopilot picks.
- Summoner choice sets your rhythm. Aurelia’s +1 Health doesn’t look flashy, but it stabilized the whole lineup.
- Role clarity wins. Tank → Reach → hybrid DPS → utility → finisher. If each slot knows its job, the lineup comes together.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment. I was convinced Death was my safest path. Turns out Earth just needed a fair test.
Final Thoughts
Today’s Frontier run with Earth was eye-opening. I didn’t win because Earth is “better than Death.” I won because the lineup roles clicked and the positions made sense. That’s both humbling and exciting... humbling because it exposes my bias, and exciting because it means I can find wins across multiple splinters by dialing in strategy.
So yeah… Earth can carry me in Frontier, too. And now that I’ve seen it, I’m doubling down on learning when to pick each splinter, not just which splinter I like most. On to the next battle! 🌿🐉⚔️

Frontier Noxious Fumes ruleset = Earth Heal + Cleanse wins everyone else
Exactly! Heal + Cleanse really shines in Noxious Fumes... Earth feels tailor-made for that ruleset.
Earth is good too! Especially high mana match.
True that... Earth really comes alive in high mana matches. Plenty of room for beefy lineups.

Totally agree, no splinter is always king. I had my “aha” moment with Water, same as you with Earth. 💧
Nice!... funny how experimenting opens up whole new playstyles.
