Announcing Season Rentals

The Splinterlands team is very excited to announce that the first version of the Season Rentals feature is completed and scheduled to go live on Tuesday, February 28, 2023!

When listing a card for rent, players will now have the option to choose if they want to list it for "daily" or "season" rental, and the card rental market pages will have filters for players to view daily or season rentals that are available.

A season rental that starts with 7 or more days remaining in the current ranked play season will be active and cannot be ended or cancelled until the end of the current season. A season rental that starts with fewer than 7 days remaining in the current ranked play season will be active and cannot be ended or cancelled until the end of the following season. After a season rental ends it will automatically go back onto the market unless the owner has cancelled the rental previously, just like with daily rentals.

Season rentals are meant to be longer term, so players who are interested in only renting cards for a few days at the end of a season should continue to use the existing daily rental system for that.

Additionally, with the current implementation all season rentals will automatically end at the same time of day on which they were rented after the end of the specified ranked play season, at which point they will need to be rented again, if desired. In the future we may allow for players to rent a card for multiple seasons up-front, as is currently possible with the daily rentals, but that feature will not be available initially.

Like daily rentals, season rentals can be done with either DEC or Credits, and are priced on a "per day" basis as the length of time of a season rental will vary based on when it is started. Also, please note that the full rental price will be paid out to the card owner immediately, not escrowed and paid out daily like with daily rentals, since the rental cannot be ended or cancelled early.

All cards currently listed on the rental market will remain as daily rentals, and only newly listed cards for which the owner chooses the season rental option will be available for season rental. Anyone who wants to switch their rental listings from daily to season will need to cancel their current listings and re-list them as season rentals.

Simplifying the Process

With the addition of season rentals, both card owners and renters will no longer need to worry about their rentals being cancelled every few days - especially right before the end of the season - which is something that has been a significant pain point for many players.

Season rentals are also a significant piece of a much larger project of simplifying the entire process of getting the cards needed to be competitive in Splinterlands for the majority of players. By combining the new season rentals with things like the "decks" feature recently released by PeakMonsters (which you can read about here) we hope to be soon be able to offer players the ability to rent an entire deck of cards at their current league level for an entire season with one click!

This has the potential to transform a very involved and complicated process of making sure you have all of the cards needed to play through the whole season into a seamless, one-click experience that should be a huge benefit to both new and experienced players alike.

Stay tuned for more updates from the Splinterlands!

This is the change I am looking for especially recently when bot take over the rental market. I am sure that it's not players who reprice the cards but bots and the result is the cards being cancelled every other day which is a pain when I am renting 35 cards everyday and REQUIRED... EVERY... SINGLE... DAY... to check which of those 35 cards are cancelled or not. The season rental would be a great help.

HOWEVER

I think the Splinterlands team should, instead of having the cards return to the market after the season ends for the season rental, I think they should have the cards be pulled back instead and the owners require to put them in the market again.

The reason is that the cards may be stuck in a very low rental and may not be able to be repriced by the owners if the season ends. Unless there would be an option of auto reprice before the season ends, I think it would be hard for the card owners to reprice their low priced rentals since it would be on rent for the whole season again after the end of the season.

TLDR: Give the card owners the tool to have the card repriced and/or option if they want the cards to be rented again at the end of the season for season rentals.

this is an excellent suggestion - season rentals getting auto-relisted at a too-low rate will discourage these players from ever wanting to use season rentals again! Great idea!

Its so awesome to see @yabapmatt and his team in action. Many of the other changes have been terrific, but this one will really really help with the player experience.

Once @jarvie and @asgarth introduce their 1-click option on their "my decks" pre-built solution, I feel that we will have finally made the experience so easy that it will encourage people to play seriously now.

With season rentals and the 1-click complete deck rental option, a player will now be able to pick a deck for a season and just play all season without doing anything more than playing.

"Set it and forget it - and just have fun!"

Thanks for this change, it will be huge!

The one click option is live today using the current rental period (daily). Looking forward to support the new option 🚀

This is awesome! Thank you for making such a cool tool! People will get addicted it to quickly I think! :D

This post is in my view pretty useless

can you explain why? I think its going to be a big game changer so obviously we see different things. I would like to know your thoughts if you have time to explain them @uwelang

Hi buddy, to explain - I missed some things during last days as I have been on a business trip. And realized I also mixed up things commenting - aplogies.

I was aware season rentals are coming and I was aware every card to rent out would cost 1 DEC and every renewal / prize update as well listing fee. 1 DEC is not a lot but I saw some discussions and also heard one rental service stopped their operations as rental market is not that interesting for people anymore that want to rent-out cards.

After some discussion I saw in mav chat around a week ago that after some talks with @genepoolchlrn8r our very own Matt wanted to change stuff and will inform us. Apart from DEC there was even more important a question of using private / active key for such operations.

After having read that other post of Matt now some things are clarified in the meantime, so let us see how that works - am not a fan of season rentals in general but the one-click thing by @jarvie sounds cool.

Sorry for sounding negative before doing all relevant research.

Cool @uwelang ... Thanks for explaining your thoughts and glad you at least like parts of the new changes. And yes the one-click rental feature will be great I think everyone will love that no matter they think about everything else! :)

Actually this a great step in the right direction

Apologies - I missed some posts last days due to some business thing, now read more content that was posted in between - i usually do my research before outlining opinion, in that case my mistake.

i Agree with you season rentals is a big step forward for the players. But i get that some of the card renters are not happy with their assests being locked up for an entire season. They like being able to cancel a rental and rais the price the next 2 day period . In essence the way it works now is they get to keep raising the price on the same person that reneted the card the day before .

I rent out a lot of cards but think that this is a very positive step for the game going forward.

It will be more valuable in the long run and to be honest your cards will spend more time rented out so it shouldn't make that much difference over time.

Better for the renters and there is still profit to be made.

I agree but some people seem to dislike it i am unsure as to why.

Then they can rent it as daily. Or is it the players decide whether it would be rented for season or daily and not the owners??

I applaud the concept of season rentals. However I am a little worried that while players will strongly prefer season rentals, there may not be really any incentive for card owners. Thanks to the pattern of increasing rental rates throughout the season, I expect most renters and rental services may stick with the existing “cancel and reprice” and players still are mostly stuck with the same problems.

We all know the tendency for people to use “the default option” - if default remains daily rentals then it will almost certainly be underused. Perhaps all the major platforms could agree to make season the default option? And can we give some incentive somehow? If the default option continues to be “daily rental” then I’m afraid this could be a vastly underused feature.

I think we will only see the end result once the season rental goes. IF the owners are the one that are able to say whether they can rent their cards as a season or daily, then your worry is answered. If the owner thinks there's little incentive for the season rental, then rent it as daily.

As I see it, there's two types of players that rent. One are the type of players, like me, they rent for the whole season and play everyday.

The others are the ones who rent every 2 days, play in 2-3 days to 50% then wait for 2 days until the energy goes to 100% until they play again.

This kind of depicts whether a player prefers season rental or daily rentals meaning both rentals would still be used.

As for the incentive in season rental, you have the card rented for the whole 14 days regardless if the player plays it or not. If he decided not to play and cancel, Oops, he can't. I don't know what the "incentive" you're looking for since you rent your cards in order for it to "get rented" right?

Thanks konaqua for the reply. But I don't see there's really any reason for the owner to "list as season rental". Like you say, daily rentals are not guaranteed. But neither is the season rental. FYI I'm thinking about Gold league and Up where rentals get pricey.

Consider the following options as a big card owner that wants to rent out cards:

Option A: It's a new season. Rates are low right now - many of my cards are renting for 2-3 DEC per day. I'll price low to rent for a few days. Then I spend 1 DEC (so what, maybe works out to cost me 0.5 DEC/Day per listing) to raise my average prices by another 3 DEC per day. I can control how aggressively I price my rentals - whether I am handling myself, or using a rental service, they can be kept near the market price, and market price usually increases. If not, I don't need to pay any relisting fee until it's economical to do so.

Option B: It's a new season. I want to list my cards for season rent on day 1. What do I want to charge? I can list my rental cards at the beginning of season rates, and they definitely will get rented - but I don't get to reprice them when rates go up later. So maybe I want to set them at a "Average Season Rate", they will be more expensive to players for a number of days. What if, after all that time, my first estimate for a good rate was too high? Then, after 7 days of no renting, I still have to spend DEC to reprice lower halfway through the season?

To me, as a card owner, Scenario A (daily rental) has a much lower risk of cards being unrented for long periods.

rent an entire deck of cards at their current league level for an entire season with one click!

This is exactly what I'm looking for! Hope to see something like this implented soon, as it would be a game-changer for a lot of players!

Looking to try the season rentals as soon as they come out! Well done!

Finally!

That's a great addition. Well done team!

This is a change that is long past due. Great job team!

Sorry to say but this does not answer important questions on DEC to be paid for renting cards, post with hardly any relevant news to me

Why only 7 Days? - Till the end of Season would be better.

Ist es nicht immer mindestens bis zum Ende der Season? Bei weniger als 7 Tagen sogar bis zum Ende der nächsten Season.

Oder verstehe ich das falsch?

I was happy to use the service, SplinterRents, but we're NOT going to share active keys with them so their service will die from these changes. If we're going to destroy the bot rental services why not make the same option available from inside the game so we don't have to list stuff every season? It was really nice having set-it-up-and-forget-about-it passive income.

Muy buena esta actualización para ambas partes

a very good news!

I think it's a great idea! The way prices would go up at the end of the season was kinda nice if you rent out your cards, but I could see how it was a problem for a variety of reasons.

very good. thank you for that

Spectacular work The Splinterlands dev team. A major improvement in the quality of life for the card owner and the renter. Keep the hits coming you are doing a superb job. Yet another economic positive and player experience positive on the board.
