This whole story isn't good for bringing new players into the game. And that's what splinterlands needs to grow big.
Without new players able to make a deck or two without investing hundreds of dollars it's gonna vanish all the playergrowth we made last period

That is true to a point. But all the decent P2E blockchain games require a decent amount of investment to even start playing, SPL gives you the option to start at $10 and if you get lucky, you might get a card you can sell. There is a lot of grinding involved no doubt, but that's the nature of trying to play any game on a budget. It's a case of time vs money.
It depends on how much needed to be invest to get a starting deck or two. 100per deck would be ok if you could get into silver but now I think it's more around 1000 to have an starting deck for fight in silver. And for newer players that amount only gets higher
It's definitely not cheap if you want to own your cards, that's why renting your card works if you manage them properly. The DEC return from battles is currently broken, so hopefully that gets addressed once CL is done. That being said, the new reward cards are very very affordable, so owning those and combining with some rentals would work. This game is not for the impatient and new players need to understand that. Its not Axie whereby you are almost able to calculate your ROI at the start.
