With Steem as the foundation for a non-fungible token (NFT) game like @Splinterlands or @NextColony, where you have ownership of digital items, vast possibilities for other game creators arise, unheard in the gaming industry. In this post I would like to look at some of these new opportunities and play around with some ideas.

Digital Ownership
Currently, all games are locked within their own universe. This usually means, that all achievements, items and currency you have earned, will never leave the game. In best case scenario, you are allowed to import your progress into upcoming sequels of the game. But one thing is clear: You never OWN anything.
I remember back in World of Warcraft, Blizzard was deleting all accounts who tried to sell items on Ebay. Do you have similar experiences with other games?
NFT's are changing the game for us (no pun intended), as we finally have complete ownership of our items, which are stored on our secure Steem account. It is entirely up to us, what we do with it, just like if it would be our money. Cryptocurrencies allow us to make this possible and immediately swap a card into something else, if we wish so.
Additionally, we get all the benefits like rarity, where some of the items are much rarer than others and have different impacts on the game itself. Further, items can be destroyed, converted, rented and many other things, we have not seen yet but will come for sure. This all makes the items even more valuable and creates a huge interest in the game, independently from the actual gameplay.

Reinterpretation of NFT's in Other Games
The fact that the data lies publicaly available on the Steem blockchain, allows other game devlopers to build on top of existing games, without even the need to ask for permission from the first games developers. The can create an entirely new game but can take some or all of the items from a game like Splinterlands and reinterpret that in theirs as something new.
For example, this means that any Splinterlands card can be interpreted as a special armor for a Role Play Game, where you have slots for various gear to improve your stats. If you have a rare level 8 Silvershield Paladin, you could get an item with a similar rarity and level, like a rare level 8 helmet. All card holders/investors of Splinterlands, would automatically get a huge benefit in the new RPG game and hold entire armor sets right from the start.

The new game would be able to piggy-back on existing games and attract a lot of attention and interest for their new project. They can now add new NFT's and an in-game currency, that are exclusive to their own game and require to be purchased/earned via the new game. With some decent gameplay and new earning opportunities through virtual ownership and rewards, people would easily open their pockets to this game, as we have seen with Splinterlands, DrugWars and NextColony.

Mutual Benefit
Should the new game be a success, it would immediately increase the value of the old games tokens, as they are now valuable in the new game as well. More people would want to have them, as more earning opportunities arise. It would be like a massive marketing campaign for the original game.
Now imagine, that the old game, from which the original NFT's were integrated into the new one, would decide to cooperate with the new project. They could reinterpret the unique items from the new game and for example integrate them as new cards, that are not available from the original game but yet playable there. This would create an insane mutual benefit, as it would make players to want to play and/or invest into both games now.
And now imagine there are ten games, that are ALL interacting with each through digital ownership and reinterpreting of each others code.

What a cool idea.
I want some Mithril Chain Mail +6 for my Level 8 Death Summoner!
Can't wait until someone builds a cool and compelling Fantasy RPG on Steem blockchain.
If that idea is implemented it would elevate this game through the roof. Upgrading your cards with items, genius.

That was not the point of my article as I speak of a different, hyptothetical game. The items would not be for the cards but for something entirely different.
However, Splinterlands WILL implement items as well, at some point down the road.
Looking forward to that time, your articles are always an interesting read, keep it up.

wow never thought of that, that would be awesome.
Dear @flauwy
I haven't been interested with gaming industry much but raise of steem-engine tokens brought my attention to this topic.
I honestly wonder if there is enough room for games build on STEEM blockchain. After all it will be difficult to get new users onboard (not even aware of steem and blockchain in general).
ps.
Since you seem to have quite enormous knowledge and experience, would you mind if I ask you to share your own opinion on my latest publication:
