I woke up in the morning to a text saying "there is blood everywhere! Come fast!". My head immediately went to assuming the worst. I rushed to see what happened and it turns out Gigi has gotten her period. I am not sure why, but seeing the look on Gigi's face made me so sad. Just a few months back this would have been a funny moment, a call to the vet, a walk to the dog store to buy diapers and that is it. But now it feels just so different.
There was a plan to spay Gigi, but the consultations were never completed because of the war. Not only that but Gigi's training was also cut short very early. Sometimes I just sit and think how much more difficult it is for a pet...not understanding what is happening, having to travel 1000s of kilometers with everyone shocked and stressed around her, not getting proper sleep or food. She still gets extremely stressed and startled by any noise that remotely resembles an explosion or gunfire.
Gigi pretty much doesn't have anything like before. Her favorite toys, her favorite walking collar, her body harness, her bed, and neither her reusable diapers that she felt very comfortable with. And she is just a pet...doesn't even realize what is happening.
We thought we were prepared for this moment. Priyan had received what she thought were disposable diapers. But it turned out to be pee training pads. And she spiraled down again. Going into the loop of saying how she feels like a terrible mom to Gigi and how she can't provide for her doggo.
Pri also is busy during the day so she had to leave. Since I work night shifts I took over to look after Gigi. So what are the white things in the pictures above?
I decided to make the most of what we already have. A DIY diaper LOL. Using the pee pads I designed a diaper and it wasn't perfect but was doing a good job for the time being. We don't have tape, thread and needles, or staplers, so for adhesive I used the sticky sides of a lint roller LOL.
It was pretty early in the morning so I had to wait for the shops to open and Gigi was wearing the DIY diaper...and not feeling very good about herself. Come 9oclock, I borrowed a bike from my friend and rode to the nearest pet store.
It is a really convenient bike system in the Netherlands. Every corner is bike-friendly. It took me around 5 minutes to get to the store. Oh, I also don't have a measuring tape so instead, I used Gigi's leash to measure her waist. Basically wrapped the leash around her waist and marked the spot.
I had to go twice since the first one I bought was just a size smaller. The second one is an XL size and it costs around 8 Euros. Leefgeld put to good use, I guess. The first one so small on Gigi it looked like she was wearing a thong haha. I wanted the big reusable ones but they didnt have them in the store. So this one was the only option.
It has a buckle system and is somewhat elastic. The big puffy ones are usually very comfortable and Gigi likes those. But for now, she will have to wear this. It comes with liners that can be changed.
Every day there is a crude reminder that life is not what it used to be. We are again starting from 0 and what we had built and the life we had is no more. Recent news about Kharkiv is not good. We had so much there and were living such a good comfortable life. But now every day there is a new challenge, a new reminder, one thing after another.
