Using the Stars in Magic
When a star’s sigil is inscribed on an object, it helps to hold the energy until it is needed. Like other symbols, star sigils can be carved into candles for ritual or painted on gemstones and other items for use as talismans. The sigils can be incorporated into charms or any object used for spells. They can be written on paper and burned as part of a spell to release and direct the star’s energy. The sigils can be used like any image we hold in our minds to focus intent and willpower. They can also provide support for ritual and divination and, of course, astrology and astral travel.
When you begin working with a star, draw its sigil on a piece of paper, place it on your altar, and meditate on it. Gaze at it for a few minutes, and then close your eyes as you hold the image in your mind. Take note of feelings or thoughts that arise, but do not dwell on them or try to analyze them. Repeat this a few times before drawing down the energy of the star. Details on how to draw down energy are covered later in this chapter.
As a common component in ritual and magic, candles provide the opportunity to incorporate color magic with the energy of the stars. Although the color of some of the brightest stars can be seen with the unaided eye, most appear white or bluish white. The most common star colors are blue, blue white, white, yellow white, yellow, orange, and red.
Because a star is not always just “a” star, more than one color can be used for an additional energy boost. A star may be binary—two stars that revolve around each other—or a group of stars, each with a different color.
