Did you know that the number of the grains of sand on all the beaches of the Earth is roughly comparable to the number of the stars in the known universe? One estimate for the number of the grains of sand is 7.5 x 10(18) - that's 18 zeros!
Yep, 7.5 x 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 of these:
Now, I know we are living in the days of QE’s and looming hyperinflation, but good luck printing that many dollars FED!
When it comes to the number of the stars, one source gives it as being 70 thousand million, million, million. – This number is even greater than the number of the grains of sand by what, roughly ten thousand times? Stars?! In the KNOWN, observable universe!
Now, I can’t verify any of that info myself and, just like the next guy, have to trust someone’s “honest!”, as they give their semi-educated guesstimate. But who is able to adequately disprove that? And so, it sounds about right, I mean believable as far as I’m concerned.
Well, one thing is for certain:
the Universe is pretty darn BIG. And a grain of sand is about the smallest thing my dimming eyesight will detect under normal conditions. So I can kind of understand how the numbers can be comparatively similar. ...sort of...
But here’s what I can’t fathom.
It’s the fact that just 10 drops of water contain roughly the same number of H2O molecules as the number of the stars in the universe. You know, the 70 thousand million, million, million number?..
I can’t imagine or comprehend it, yet it looks like this is the kind of incomprehensible reality that all of us are faced with.
And so, here’s the thought, more like a question, that struck me:
„Maybe, I’ve been taking myself just a tiny bit too seriously?“
What do you guys think?
To tell is too much or not we need to know what is ok amount of seriousness) But to answer your question I will qoute Niel D. Tyson:
We have come to define significance as "I am special and everything else not". But top 4 ingridiens of life (and our bodys) is - hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen. And top 4 chemically active atoms in the Universe are also hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen. So upon learning that you are not special because you not contain special ingredients is the same fact that includes the idea that while we are living in this Univers, the Univers lives within us. We are special becouse we are the same as the Universe.
I could make a counter argument using the same logic: if everything is made of these four elements, then what would make me so special?
Well what is the most significant thing? The Univers isnt it? And we actualy are made of the same stuff. Like small version of the greatest thing possible. In scales of 7.5 x 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 its hard to thing about yourself as special if you are just have some guinness world record or you are a president of USA or you are a new Mozart. The only thing in this scales what matters IMHO is how can you relate yourself to something so magnificent like the Univers. And it comes out we can do it! And thats what makes you special.
We certainly may feel insignificant in comparison to the multitudes of stars or the countless molecules and atoms. However, we are NOT insignificant because we have the initiative and power to change the world! Nice post. Made me ponder. Upvoted.
