September Stats: Post Rewards by Category

in #stats8 years ago

In my yesterday’s Post Rewards Distribution post I looked at how post rewards were distributed among authors. Now let’s see how they are distributed between categories.

In September, slightly over 60k posts were published in 5046 categories. I’ve taken about 60 most popular categories excluding language categories such as #cn and #ru. The most popular one, #steemit, has 4680 posts, more than 150 a day! The last one on my list, #business, has just 84, which is about 3 posts a day.

For each category I’ve calculated how much an average post in that category is paid. The chart below shows for each category the number of posts (red line, left axis) and average payout in Steem dollars (green columns, right axis).

So #stats posts are the best paid (and this is why this my post goes to that category!). #story, #steem, and #beyondbitcoin are doing well, too, while #video, #football, and #business attract almost no paying votes. The worst category seems to be #pressrelease: 400 posts published there received just 3 cents in payments!

I’ve then compiled a few more tables for smaller groups of categories:

Languages

#cn and #kr are active and pay well. #ru is the second largest in terms of posts, but payouts are minimal - this might be the reason why Russians were the first to clone Steem. #spanish and #deutsch are smaller but most rewarding.

Arts

#photography is the most popular, while #writing, #fiction, #film, and #movies dominate in terms of rewards. Consider publishing your next poem in #poetry rather than #poem - somehow it pays better. In a similar way, #photography works better than #photo.

What about Sciences?

#astronomy is the absolute winner here, likely due to success of the Re-evaluating the star of Bethlehem series by @vuyusile. There seems to be less interest in #psychology and #history.

Finally, Cryptocurrencies!

#bitshares is paying much more than even #steem! What does that mean? #gridcoin and #synereo made it to the top ten along with mainstream currencies.

Even #spam Makes Money on Steemit

  • Steemit is probably the first platform to reward spam! 154 posts in #spam got 641 votes and $0.37 =)
  • #test pays even better: 233 posts and $1.48 in total
  • The winner in this weird category league was… #the: 34 posts were paid $48.91. I guess what happens is authors just paste a line of text into the Tags box, and if that line starts with the, the post ends up there. Funny.

Not sure what conclusion we can draw here. I noticed this just because the two were next to each other in my data set.

I've used the steemtools library by @furion to collect data for this post

Excellent! That is very useful and well presented. I read it in a sigh. Best wishes!

Thank you! I certainly meant this post to be an easy read

Regarding language stats, if you can distinguish between posts written in local languages only and posts written in English (+ local languages).
