Exploring steemit database Ep. 1 : All time Top 5 Posts, and what we can learn from them

in #steeemit7 years ago

Few days ago, I saw a post by @stellabelle in which she asked for help to find top steemit posts to publish on Medium, to promote steemit network. In the post itself she specifically asked for the highest grossing steemit post ever, because she couldn’t remember which one was it, and steemit does not have the feature to sort all posts by the payout amount.

Although I was not on steemit at the time that post had been written, it took me only a couple of seconds to write a database query that would return that very post and help her out.

The whole set of events sparked my interest, and I wanted to see which posts created the biggest payouts on this platform, so I dug a little deeper and found them.

Besides just listing them here so that you can all admire them (which would be boring), I am going to write a short review on what each of those posts were about, so stick with me.

Number 5 - How Steemit Has Changed My Life: From living on $1/day and 3 hours of electricity to Having over $41,319

One of the most inspiring steemit posts for sure, the post by @infovore about how he grew up in incredibly hard conditions, his love for technology, trying to make a few dollars online and finally stumbling upon steemit.
Needless to say, it is an incredible story and if you haven’t read it already, you should do it right now. The post was published at 07/19/2016 and generated an incredible amount of $18,019. He’s still an active member of our community, and publishes high quality posts on weekly basis.

Number 4 - [steemit.chat] – FOSS Alternative to SLACK deployed with RocketChat

Posted by @cass, the birth of steemit.chat as we know it today. After the official slack channel was hacked, few developers united to create official steemit chat platform. The platform was built on open source software and it is up and running to this very day. The funds from this post are used to fund servers that support it. Post was published in 07/27/2016 and community reacted with a lot of support generating $25,602.
If you haven’t done so far, go ahead and register here. There is a lot of discussion going on, on various topics and a lot of channels.

Number 3 - SA’s City of Durban to be engulfed by STEEM! The world to follow!

A post by @steemdrive, true and dedicated initiative for promoting steemit network. Funds from this post were used to pay billboards that promote steemit in South Africa. One great example how steemit can be used to crowdfund incredible ideas.

You can see the first billboards this post has paid in the followup post here. But, this was not the end of this successful story. A lot of other billboard campaigns emerged with the same purpose, only in different places such as these: New Zealand and Chicago
The original post was published on 07/25/2016 and generated $27,037 but whole movement generated around $50,000. True blockchain power.

Number 2 - THE FIRST STEEMIT MAKEUP TUTORIAL- bringing Youtubers to Steemit!! Tara is back!

Posted by @guerrint. The title is pretty much self-explanatory. You can check the video she made on this link. The post was published on 07/16/2016 and generated $31,543. I believe that’s at least 3000x more than her YouTube video would generate if it was monetized with their standard monetization tools. Her post should be used as incentive for all youtubers out there to join steemit and express their creativity on a platform that will truly appreciate it.

Number 1 - [piston.web] First Open Source Steem GUI - Searching for alpha testers

Posted by @xeroc. Sits far on top of the list. The publishing of standalone Graphical User Interface or as they call it “Swiss army knife” that you can use to interact with steemit blockchain even if the official site goes down. Just follow the instructed provided on @xeroc/piston and you are ready to go. Link to GitHub
The post itself was published on 07/22/2016 generated $46,973 therefore rewarding developers for all the hard work they put into this project.

Conclusion

Notice anything common in these posts (except for the fact that they were all published in the same week of July 2016)? I do.
All the posts listed above are individual movements that led to making this platform, and our experience using it, a lot better and our community bigger. Personally, I believe that there is a lot of things that are yet to be created and improved, and all of us have some skills we can use to contribute and help out.
If you see someone trying to create something new and useful, don’t just stand by and read their posts, reach out and offer your help, and maybe one day you will be the one to receive the recognition like the people I just mentioned.
