A lot of people like how busy.org lays things out on their site...it's definitely worth seeing if you prefer it.
The short answer on the blockchain...
Most the cryptocurrencies (steem, bitcoin, etc) actually run on their own blockchain, which you can think of as the looong list of all transactions that have occurred, like an accounting ledger would track all the revenue, expenses, etc for a business. For Steem however, these transactions also include things like writing a post, comment, and voting. The steem blockchain is where most of the info we create and actions we take on Steemit takes place. Steemit (or busy.org, steepshot, zappl) is just what they call the 'front-end', the Steem Blockchain is the 'back-end.'
There is a section in this post that get's a little more into explaining the blockchain in an easy to understand form.
Since I am a student of BBA, your example of accounting ledger was helpful.
