We Need Advertising Revenue, You Say?

Remember this little gem from July 10, 2017?

Advertising Revenue and Distributions on the Steem Blockchain

Yeah...Ned remembers it too. I shared it with him and he summarily dismissed the entire concept. Now his company, Steemit Inc., is allegedly struggling to stay afloat because he apparently decided to rely on speculation alone for long-term revenue streams.

And now everyone else is talking about advertising on Steem and its interfaces like it's some brand new concept for blockchains and social media. I guess I was ahead of the game...a true innovator!

And here we are...

I am really growing weary of being constantly vindicated. If only people would actually be willing to listen the first time. Think of how far ahead of the curve we could be right now?

Trust me, I'm more sad than amused to see the sudden uprising of people who are indignantly posting about their newly realized awareness of collusion, corruption, mismanagement or worse, malicious management, misuse of funds, lack of deliverables, failures and embarrassments of the "dear leaders", and I am totally disgusted by the fanboi-ing, kool-aid drinking and rah rah of the sheep who cling to their cognitive dissonance. But what do, really? We've been calling this shit out for how long now?

Sadly, it mimics the "real world" - we know the government is corrupt, we know it's mismanaged, we know it's working actively against us, but unable to cope with or change much about that, it's almost like stockholm syndrome kicks in, in some sort of last ditch self preservation mode.

Guess that's how we got here...

I'm going to have to make that into a t-shirt:

Yeah, me too. It's the damned truth.

Predicting is not useful if no one listens.
If no one listens it's not their fault, it's yours.
Try to get your point across in a better way, persuade people.
Blaming others is easy, being in the driver's seat is hard.
Be responsible for steem's state. Code. Convince. Do whatever it takes but saying I told you so won't bring more people on your side.

Intensifies.

Any questions?

Steem already has advertising system. But the problem is that it is broken. People don't need to use the promote function. They can just boost posts by using bidbots. I wrote about that yesterday on a musing answer: https://musing.io/q/ocupation/f36bbgc3w?r=profile-littleboy

I'm pretty sure hes talking about a real advertising systems as in pay with other currency other than SBD/STEEM.

LOL. I said similar when I started. There were even some flagging for the use of affiliate links. I thought it was utterly stupid how some were so staunchly against advertising. Advertising can be annoying as fuck...but if done well, can be non-intrusive. Many barely notice the adverts on the top and side of almost every website. The ones that really annoy are the ones that popup and appear in the middle of an article or force you to watch a video to see something.

Popups and popunders don't even pay that well. You need a massive website for them to pay off. Affiliate earnings that pay a percentage are far better. You gamble on displaying the banner ads and such, but in turn you can earn quite a pretty penny. A portion of that money could then be returned to users, if the terms of service of the advertiser allowed it. You could even set it up so users had control over adverts displayed on pages associated with their blog. You could even let them disable adverts on their blog, if they wanted.

Pay from here sucks for most users TBH. We also don't get paid if we attract users outside of Steem. An extra revenue stream that might in fact be in the hundreds or thousands per month, is significant for many users, and even a small percentage of that income would be quite significant for Steemit, and could be used to actually buy back Steem at low levels, rather than always selling it.

The ones that really annoy are the ones that popup and appear in the middle of an article or force you to watch a video to see something.

Exactly!

Reason why this proposal is better!

When we're busy publishing, before we hit the post button, we should be able to select from a list of these promoted posts and include one or two to sit as banners within or under our publications. If a member visits our blog, sees one of these ads, then clicks; that click should function just like the vote button, rewarding the author of the post. That's one of the easiest ways a blogger here could generate ad revenue.
The ads could jockey for position on this list by spending more and more money like they do now to hijack the trending page. That, my friends, is good for business. Everyone wins.
Bloggers curate advertisements to include with their posts, and when that advertisement gets it's reward, a share of the final revenue should go to all bloggers who chose to include that ad on their post.

https://steemit.com/@nonameslefttouse/i-don-t-want-to-be-a-sellout-and-a-few-other-things-i-find-somewhat-humorous-about-this-place

That's certainly an option.

I would personally prefer a combination of in-house adverts in addition to ones from traditional companies. One of the best advantages of traditional adverts is that they could pay out to users far past 7 days.

I still get paid for users that signed up on sites I haven't owned for years. Granted, it's not as much as it was, since many of those users likely quit the corresponding sites and stopped buying things. What's really awesome is when I suddenly get a huge payout from something because a few users decide to buy things all in the same period. A surprise check for a few hundred dollars is always welcome.

I would personally prefer a combination of in-house adverts in addition to ones from traditional companies

That's the beauty of this platform. We can have the front ends give us as many options as we like.

We can always have both and more!

We possibly could even get payouts from interfaces we don't even use.

Good thing we didn't "sully" the steemit platform with advertising, that was a close call..lol ;-)

Remember this little gem from July 10, 2017?

With good old organic votes...

Those were the days eh?

Well, as organic as they can be in this system.

We already have advertising. It's called buying fucking votes. Why are the bidbots marketed as "promotional tools" and such? Because every fucking post that uses them is an advertisement, a PROMOTED POST, paid programming, a goddamn advertisement.

https://steemit.com/@nonameslefttouse/the-trending-tab-on-steemit-is-becoming-paid-programming-and-should-be-labelled-accordingly

January 10th, 2018. I tried to point out early on why it's important to do this ADVERTISING stuff properly.

It evolved into this deep rabbit hole of links and even a video someone else made.

https://steemit.com/steem/@phoneinf/how-to-make-steem-blockchain-into-a-success-the-new-google-solution-by-nonameslefttouse

I called this mess we're in long before people even knew it would turn into a mess. I offered solutions early on, the end results and benefits far exceed those of anything anyone else has come up with so far.

All I did was waste my fucking time. The current promotional system of buying votes can be altered in a fashion that benefits everyone from the passive investor to the organic content producer. Obviously nobody wants that, can't understand it, or hates my idea because they didn't think of it first.

Pardon me for venting. Anyway, I'm sure you have votes to sell to people who do not give a fuck about this place. Have a good day buddy!

Nice toxicity, bro!

Vent all you want, by the way. I ain't mad atcha. I tried to warn people that things were going to go downhill if "development" was left in the hands of STINC after Dan left and if witnesses didn't grow a spine and reject hard fork proposals.

I am a product of my environment now, for better or worse. I tried to be the righteous holdout. I tried to argue the facts. But nobody cares about that shit until it's too late. So here we are...

Hard to grow a spine, when you're a marionette beholden to the puppet masters.

Yup! Trying to save the day is "toxic!" Confronting people, putting them on the spot and asking questions is "toxic!" Having a brain is "toxic!" Calling out the bullshit is "toxic!" Gotta pretend we're in church! SHHH!!! Sing your songs! LOL... wtf am I doing...

Here we are...

Yep. I know how all of that goes. I've been doing it for over two years. Do you know where it has gotten me?

Hell...Ned gets so triggered by my mere existence in a chat that he kicks out other witnesses that are just somewhat associated with me. Look at the replies I get from official Steemitblog posts (oh, right...they never reply). Look where I plateaued on the witness list.

I was labeled "toxic" by the people that I have rightly called out. And even after being vindicated again and again for being correct, I'm still dismissed and still labeled by those same people who now say exactly the same things I said 1-2 years ago.

So...join the club, bro. It truly is an honor to have you. I'm not being sarcastic. You're a good guy and you're now in good company, in my opinion.

I saw some of these posts about bringing in advertisements. It drives me crazy watching some of these folks try to figure it out.

All we have to do is EMBRACE the content producer and their content. Why? Because BILLIONS!
Screenshot (507).png

Remove every post using bidbots away from things like THE DREADED TRENDING PAGE, give that back to organic content producers. Place all of those promoted shitty bidbot posts within a market. Have content producers CHOOSE shitty advertisements from this market BEFORE publishing, give everyone TWO SLOTS to fill.

Now, instead of a twenty or so ad slots on the trending page that nobody looks at, we've created thousands upon thousands of ad slots for all these shitty promoted posts that drive content consumers away. Allow the goddamn actual content producer to lure the eyes FIRST to their work, then potentially the ads INSIDE blog posts, videos, whatever!

When these ads are placed inside a market, they can first buy STEEM to get there, then all these passive investors can offer their services and help those wanting to promote jockey for position within this market just like the trending tab here. The more you pay, the higher you shitty advertisement sits within this market. That way, the lazy blogger can choose from the top slots, but everyone else can DECIDE what they want to promote on THEIR blog. Maybe it's an ad for a new token, maybe it's a witness trying to promote themselves, maybe it's coca cola. The one promoting would offer incentives for content producers to choose their ads, such as higher percentage of the ad revenue. When someone clicks an ad, that click serves as a vote for the content producer hosting that ad! LOOK! Another way to create ad revenue for the content producer.

Now, since there's competition within this ad market because they have to jockey for position and people are CHOOSING ads, I've created a way to maintain steady buying pressure on STEEM to the tune of potentially billions of outside money pouring in every year, provided the content producers perform. Giving content producers their stage back plus potential ad revenue on top of votes will certainly be a great incentive to want to do well and many would flock to this place because they have a viewership and potential revenue streams. Hooray! Just like anywhere else on the internet!

People could then sell votes, that wouldn't affect organic content producers, make it fair so those selling votes aren't earning far more than those curating BECAUSE A HEALTHY BALANCE of sellers and curators is needed OR EVERYONE LOSES BILLIONS! Hooray! Now everyone has a role to play, works together instead of against each other, and our token can increase in value due to demand...and that helps pay to keep the lights on, plus we all earn. An incentive to hold the token is there, the incentive to buy is there, the incentive to use the token as a tool is there, the incentive to curate content is there, and even you shitty greasy vote sellers get to make money!

But that's not all!

Something as simple as giving each advertisement ONE TAG to use now creates MULTIPLE MARKETS where everyone must buy STEEM to enter, then pay stakeholders to jockey for position within these markets! The competition part is what makes it genius! I did that!

LOL!

I'm not even finished. I left out a lot, plenty of holes. It's simple, yet complex, and without everything working together, it simply won't work. For instance, if the vote sellers try to make it so they earn the most, everyone puts their money there, but nobody curates, the content producer can't succeed, and the ads don't get views! So don't be getting greedy now, or you'll lose billions!

Yes, The system did drown in back-scratching, to put it politely.

my guess is we have about enough traffic to pay for one trending post with ad revenue.

Yes, I remember you saying it.

But also... All the people want this to be free, have no ads, unlimited use, no need to invest. Etc.

Don't mind me I'm grumpy.

But also... All the people want this to be free, have no ads, unlimited use, no need to invest. Etc.

Well, people also don't know what they want or how most things work, so a large majority of them can simply be ignored when adults are talking business.

Don't mind me. I'm still "toxic," apparently. :)

All the people want this to be free, have no ads, unlimited use, no need to invest

Thats because we don't want any of that forced, look-at-me-by-all-means advertising crap

Just good ol adverts and have Steem Inc and the bloggers split the profit!

https://steemit.com/@nonameslefttouse/i-don-t-want-to-be-a-sellout-and-a-few-other-things-i-find-somewhat-humorous-about-this-place

Hopefully we learn and grow from being hungry. Some people can't catch food till they worry about starving. That's humanity for ya.

Such a truly unprecedented level of prophetic accuracy.

I have been known to be quite prophetic in my lifetime.

hindsight

No way, bro! That was foresight!

i meant for him lol ✌

Try not to make sense else he'd mute you. That's if he hasn't done that already.

Time To Decouple Steemit & Steem Once and For All By Sunsetting Steemit.com (smooth's suggestion) to a Wallet only or redirect it to Steem.com. We don't want people to confuse the awesome crypto with this shitty interface like so many do. Even coinbase description has it wrong.

I don't think Ads are the answer, I think focus is the answer. And potentially getting outside funding.

The curse of Cassandra, eh? Hopefully the ship doesn't sink.

Most of the comments from that time where very positive and forward thinking. So I don't have the impression that there is a new Aha moment where everybody now see the opportunity with Ads. Even Dclick just recently tried to bring ads to Steem in a decentralized way.
I hope that ned won't hesitate too long with the implementati8n of it.

I'm starting to think this proposal is but a band-aid to the gangrene we see today. Not that it's a lost cause, but its true that more needs to be done by Steemit.inc to keep themselves alive. I neither know what they need to do nor would i try to think of ways..

Steemit.inc Every single fucking top 20 witness HAS GOT to get their shit together.

I like Steem, I like that I can post something here where people actually read and not get an email by "admins" saying they've removed my post or account for "not follwoing community guidelines".

I do not know if I really understand everything you want to explain here. More. If I think you're talking about what I think you're talking about..

hi @ats-david

I wonder if Steemit Inc. will ever follow their footsteps. I believe it's just a matter of time before we will introduce ads to Steemit and then they will work on targeting ads, which will result in collecting our data.

What do you think?

Have a great weekend ahead,
Yours
Piotr

I just visited this post again now that Steemit INC has possibly started moving towards implementing some ad revenue in the last week.

A lot of us were talking about advertising in different ways so there wasn't so much sell pressure on STEEM.

Many months ago @lukestokes acted like I was an idiot when talking about advertising on here. Everything is fine here for him. This has been a great funding mechanism for him.

??? When did I do this?

I've talked about advertising as a viable approach many times on a number of different Discord shows. My preferred approach would be opt-in, revenue sharing with users, and it would show content inline similar to how Twitter and Facebook do it.

I spent 9.5 BTC on STEEM in July of 2016 and got rekt. "A great funding mechanism for him" is just silly.

I'm not going to dig up the conversation because like most things here it would be a waste of my time but I referenced how much CoinMarketCap was charging for banner ads and you referenced the traffic to that site vs Steemit and acted like it wasn't a legitimate comparison and said something to the effect of "let's not get ahead of ourselves."

I also referenced some of the people like @nonlinearone who were very competent who left STEEM long ago which would have been the smart choice for most of us. You acted like all those people weren't engaging and basically acted like people who threaten to quit don't get rewarded etc....

At the end of the day STEEM is in trouble. I would much rather sit on DOGE and Digibyte and Electroneum. At least with those they will just sit and waste my time thinking about what could have been or devalue my time.

Unfortunately it is pretty clear that Steemit INC isn't competent.

There are about 50 or 60 people draining the fuck out of this place and for everyone else it has been a game of Don't Get Dumped on which we lost.

For the amount you have earned from being a Witness you haven't earned your keep. @berniesanders called it out a long time ago and sometimes the truth hurts. You generate a report once in awhile and that is about it. I can't blame you though. The passive income stacks up and you are able to work on EOS related stuff. Why do more work when you keep getting rewarded for your current behavior?

There are thousands of us who could have "witnessed" STEEM stacking up in our wallets. Plenty of us are technical enough to at least do that but anyone with half a brain knows the distribution was ruined from day one and the witness voting situation has always been a sham. I was hopeful that the community could overcome those issues but to be honest with you I was a fool for thinking that.

The best thing that could happen is to get a group of legit community members to pool their resources and launch an EXODUS project from this blockchain. Unless several of them could get in the top 20 witness positions or were already there the funding wouldn't be enough to build a new iteration of a platform like this on EOS with a fair distribution and a "fairdrop" to everyone holding at least 500 SP. Fixing things like the fact that there is no Witness vote decay and actually focus on additional revenue streams besides just speculation of a poorly distributed crypto with an inflation rate that is too high for the amount of improvements the main access portal (Steemit.com) has rolled out in the last couple of years clearly didn't cut it.

If the movement could gain enough STEEM and successfully launch then the possibility of funding from EOS VC would be more realistic as well.

But that is probably just a stupid idea. I probably don't know anything about EOS and @ned will pull through for us and our investment here. Actually I'm just a complainer like @ats-david and @berniesanders . STEEM is doing fine

@lukestokes has never done anything but contribute to the fanboy culture of the top 20.

Hahhah

I will say that @lukestokes did call into question what was going on during the winter of 2016 / 2017 when we were getting the silent treatment from Steemit Inc.

But at some point I feel he lost touch with what 99.98% of people were seeing when they looked at what was going on here.

How many witness actually do code reviews? Reliably producing blocks and securing the network is the primary job of a witness after all. But hey, if I'm the bad guy, and I've lost touch, don't vote for me.

I've looked through much of this code and since I'm not (yet) a C++ developer, my usefulness in that regard is limited.

Look man you are a smart guy and you positioned yourself well. A lot of people out there are ghost figures and so actually you are front and center and willing to be on camera and the reputation builds and you stay pretty neutral on most topics so for the most part people aren't going to get pissed off. You have the family man / Ivy League graduate going for you. Then the gutsy move to PR....etc. You will be fine.

Where I think you have lost touch is that you won't really look past the fact that you are having this stream of coins flowing into your wallets and actually admit how broken this system is from the witness voting to having no additional revenue sources supporting the price of STEEM to the borderline fraudulent empty promises made my Steemit Inc.

Sometimes those who keep their mouths shut earn the most money in this world. Usually people who call out the bullshit don't get the positions or retain positions.

So I referenced facts about the comparison made and you took that to mean I thought you were an idiot?

I don't think you're an idiot. We clear now?

People rage quit Steem for all kinds of reasons. It's possible they have different reasons for being here in the first place. I've always been excited about Steem because it's a real blockchain project providing real value to real people. That's rare and something I was looking for when I first bought some bitcoin in 2013. And by value, I don't just mean cryptocurrency, I mean a decentralized blogging platform that can't be censored.

For the amount you have earned from being a Witness you haven't earned your keep.

That may be the case, and it's up to voters to decide. Since day 1, I've been here explaining technical things in simple terms and have helped educate many on how some of this blockchain cryptocurrency stuff works. I have always been grateful for the votes I've received, and I've delegated most of that Steem Power out to what I think are useful projects, as you can see on https://solicitingpower.com/ I haven't been cashing out much at all, even during the year long bear market. I may start, and I have no problems with that.

Seems a bit like you're venting with frustration about Steem, Steemit, inc and more. That's fine, that's just not the approach I personally take. Sure, I vent now and again also, but I try to do it with practical suggestions. I'm glad Steemit, inc did at least take my advice and start communicating more effectively over this past year. I'm glad to see core blockchain development did move forward with appbase and now hopefully RocksDB as well. I imagine other DPoS chainbase blockchains will follow in Steem's footsteps on this.

That said, I don't get Ned at all nor am I happy about the way Steemit, inc has done things, made empty promises about SMTs, and more. I agree, STEEM may be in trouble. It may also be going through a much needed phase to decentralize away from Steemit, inc. Time will tell.

But I get it, and I hear you. You need bad guys to point to, and I'm your list. Okay.

You aren't a bad guy @lukestokes I just think you have lost touch with how the majority of people feel about this blockchain. There are many reasons why the attrition has been so high.

I have been mining crypto since 2013 and one of the reasons I was attracted to certain projects was the ability to mine them. I was mining Quark before it went parabolic. I mined 1000 Monero in 2014 and into 2015. There are other people like me who are more attracted to blockchains they can participate in. With STEEM by the time I found out about it there was a POW block every 20 blocks or so but someone already had a GPU miner on it and had all those rabbit accounts. Great for them. Also the Witness situation was a clear sham from day 1 and continues to be so to this day. I just wonder how many people looked at it and decided it was a waste of time....etc.

No content creator even with the "very best" content can actually make a living on a supposed content platform with a market cap of $81 Million . Does anyone see an issue with that?

In a lot of ways people have become embarrassed even to talk about STEEM. Even the few content creators that got somewhat decent rewards turned their back on it as soon as things changed. Those of us who stupidly stuck around can't really participate in the system besides making a few bucks here posting but that will be erroded away as STEEM slips down the list on CoinMarketCap. We are way better off bag holding cryptos that have 1 purpose. Currency.

The worse things get here and the blatant issues were never addressed the more I feel like that this blockchain has been just as damaging if not more so than Bitconnect.

I hate to say it but it is true. It is like a carrot hanging out there and a lot of us chased their carrot of gaining more influence but in reality there were only 50 or 60 people who could really gain anything substantial.

Without vote decay and no rotational method to allow others to become Witnesses it is well ......... a sham

It was my mistake for continuing to see potential in this system and be hopeful that things could improve.
