Will blockchain size become an issue if Steem gains large scale popularity?

in #steem8 years ago

I'm wondering what effect large scale adoption of the Steem platform will have on it's blockchain size.

Will it ever need to be compressed or truncated in some fashion? I've read concerns about Bitcoin and it's blockchain size and am guessing this is a pending issue for many cryptocurrencies. I'm curious how much memory will be required to 'house' all the articles, blogs, links, etc. that accumulate over time. At some point will it discourage interested parties from securing the network?

Sort:

It will grow beyond what home computer can handle. But it will remain decentralized and secure.

Hey dan. Can you tell me if the storage of text is going to continue being stored on-chain or if it is intended to go to IPFS or something of the like?

So when reddit says they have to "Archive" posts to save room on their servers, they are lying right? Becauyse steemit is working fine, and i mean, steemit doesnt have to worry about paying for hiosting right? the steem witnesses do the "hosting" right? or is steemit.com hosted on some server thats private but steemit.com is not the steem blockchain i now the difference and how thre is busy.org if steemit.com is ever down (very cool) but Im wondering about this new video project view.ly and how we will be able to store all these videos since they will aparently be stored on the blockchgain with 100mb file size? and so how can we stopre all those videos?

and steemimgs is that just a hosting site hosted off the blockchain/ the image files themslevss arent actualy on steem blockchgain right? The only way to publish an image into stemit blokchain is to open a Jpeg or some image file in notepad and get the text and paste that text into steemit post, hat would work right? lol but what is the limit per steemit post and why dont peiopel worry about hosting anymore and how can we silencethe critics who say steem is "creaking" and what are the main reasons that stem becomes stronger as more users join like EOS righty? or is tht not true? I feel steem will work because it IS workinga nd i havent eveer experienced it not work and even steemit.com has never been down sionce ive started using it in march its really solid and nooen gives it asmuch credt as it desrves BECAUSE noone knos aboiut it! we need a MASSIVE ad campaign!

One thing I can say is that Dan Larimer has been stating for years now that bitcoin is going to have some big problems to deal with---with one of the primary ones being the blocksize debate. The Graphene blockchain tech was made precisely to ensure that the problems seen early on in bitcoin would be remedied with graphene (and future iterations).

Can someone provide me a link where I can find the full size of the steem blockchain?

so one year later, whats the current size? and what about view.ly storiung videos on the steem blockchain, how will we cop with video uploads when we will compte with youtube ? I just am cruoious and i know we can do it, we can do anything now, decentralized will allow for the entiure sstem to work better and i bet EOS will playa part in teh future ....am i close?

I'm currently attempting to sync a full witness node on my system, and I'm at 54GB - and only synced up to mid-Nov. 2016.

I do think this will be a huge problem in the future, especially as people are pushing more content. It will be completely unsustainable if they want to put video in there. There's already very few witness nodes (less than 200?) which would seems like it could be a major problem for the network. I'm still figuring out DPOS based blockchains, so it could be perfectly secure with that low number of nodes - just seems odd to me.

Just an update on this - looks like the daemon reserves a 54GB file for data; this doesn't necessarily mean it's using it all. :)

Interesting thread. Same mindset here. No matter how populair a coin is. People should always do a proper background check. It surprises me how many coins are out there that don't have their basics right. Does anyone know about: https://www.coincheckup.com This site did all the research for you. It's truly amazing. For example: https://www.coincheckup.com/coins/Steem#analysis To see the: Steem Analysis.
