On a related note, this is definitely very much a newbie question, but I've never quite understood curation trails. Why does one create one and why does one participate in one?

If you set up or join an already existing curation trail you will automatically upvote all the posts the curation trail leader upvotes...
you also can adjust the voting power you want to use...
as "newbie" with less than 500 SP every vote you cast will be 100 %... as your voting power refreshes just 20 % each 24 hours you just can cast 20 votes per day...
joining an curation trail and adjust your voting power you can cast more votes and so spread it more...
another point is, that curation trail leaders mostly pick out very good posts where they cast there vote on - so maybe you get a better curation reward than voting manually...
if you join our curation trail there is another bonus: as we upvote all posts of the upv4life member you not only get the upv4life upvote but also the curationtrail votes (14 at the moment)...
so right now with low voting power you really won't get big reward out of it but even setting voting power at e.g. 1 % can profit our members and in the long run you, too...
just give it a try but remember to set the voting power low so that you still can cast some manual votes every day, too and your voting power won't decrease so fast...
another fine thing: it run's automated, so if you one day do not throw votes manually the curation trail (a bot) still votes and you earn ;-)
