bitcoin is probably the biggest trading pair for alt coins so when dollar value drops in bitcoin it's only logical they drop too
That's exactly where the problem comes from and the fact that Bitcoin is the one being accepted by most merchants. Anything that happens to BTC, the lesser coins follow.
The need to build an economy outside of Bitcoin is necessary.
